When I sailed into Portland town, I called upon my dear. Her window held a candle. It′s light shone bright and clear.
I walked up to her doorstep. I knew she was within. Her candle told the story, boys, and I was home again.

I like her good behaviour. I like her easy way. I cannot sleep contented. The night seems like the day.
To sail in muddy weather, it makes me want to shout and roll her in my arms, boys, and blow the candle out.

When I got home to Portland, 'twas as I said before. The candle at the window and my love at the door.
We let the candle go, boys. We had no care or strife. We went to see the parson and she became my wife.

And when we have a baby, boys, we′ll name him after me. She'll keep him neat and kiss him and rock him on her knee,
And when this trip is over, I'll sail no more about. Yes, I′ll remain in Portland, Maine, to blow the candle out.

Quand je suis arrivé à Portland, j'ai fait un tour chez ma chérie. Sa fenêtre avait une bougie. Sa lumière brillait si clairement.
J'ai marché jusqu'à sa porte. Je savais qu'elle était là. Sa bougie me disait tout, mon petit cœur, j'étais enfin rentré.

J'aime son bon comportement. J'aime sa simplicité. Je ne peux pas dormir tranquillement. La nuit ressemble au jour.
Naviguer dans le temps pluvieux, ça me donne envie de crier et de te serrer dans mes bras, mon ange, et d'éteindre ta bougie.

Quand je suis arrivé à Portland, c'était comme je l'avais dit. La bougie à la fenêtre et mon amour à la porte.
On a éteint la bougie, mon amour. On n'avait ni soucis ni peine. On est allés voir le prêtre et tu es devenue ma femme.

Et quand on aura un enfant, mon cœur, on l'appellera de mon nom. Tu le garderas propre et tu l'embrasserras et tu le berceras sur tes genoux.
Et quand ce voyage sera fini, je ne naviguerai plus. Oui, je resterai à Portland, dans le Maine, pour éteindre ta bougie.
