(Introduction, spoken:)
Last December 13th, there appeared in the newspapers the juiciest,
spiciest, raciest obituary it has ever been my pleasure to read.
It was that of a lady named Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel, who had,
in her lifetime, managed to acquire as lovers practically all of
the top creative men in central Europe. And, among these lovers,
who were listed in the obituary, by the way, which is what made
it so interesting, there were three whom she went so far as to
marry: One of the leading composers of the day, Gustav Mahler,
composer of "Das Lied von der Erde" and other light classics,
one of the leading architects, Walter Gropius, of the "Bauhaus
School of Design", and one of the leading writers, Franz Werfel,
author of the "Song of Bernadette" and other masterpieces.
It's people like that who make you realize how little you've
accomplished. It is a sobering thought, for example, that when
Mozart was my age, he had been dead for two years!
It seemed to me, on reading this obituary, that the story
of Alma was the stuff of which ballads should be made,
so here is one:

The loveliest girl in Vienna
Was Alma, the smartest as well,
Once you picked her up on your antenna,
You'd never be free of her spell.
Her lovers were many and varied
From the day she began her beguine.
There were three famous ones whom she married,
And God knows how many between...

Alma, tell us,
All modern women are jealous,.
Which of your magical wands
Got you Gustav and Walter and Franz?

The first one she married was Mahler
Whose buddies all knew him as Gustav.
And each time he saw her he'd holler,
"Ach, that's the fraulein I must have!"
Their marriage, however, was murdah.
He'd scream to the heavens above,
"I'm writing Das Lied von der Erde,
and she only wants to make love!"

Alma, tell us,
All modern women are jealous,
You should have a statue in bronze
For bagging Gustav and Walter and Franz.

While married to Gus she met Gropius,
And soon she was swinging with Walter.
Gus died and her teardrops were copious.
She cried all the way to the altar.
But he would work late at the Bauhaus
And only came home now and then.
She said, "What am I running, a chow house?
It's time to change partners again!"

Alma, tell us,
All modern women are jealous!
Though you didn't even use Ponds,
You got Gustav and Walter and Franz.

While married to Walt she met Werfel,
And he too was caught in her net.
He married her but he was careful,
'Cause Alma was no Bernadette.
And that is the story of Alma
Who knew how to receive and to give.
The body that reached her embalmah
Was one that had known how to live!

Alma, tell us,
How can they help being jealous?
Ducks always envy the swans
Who get Gustav and Walter,
You never did falter
With Gustav and Walter and Franz!

I know some people feel that marriage as an institution
is dying out, but I disagree. And the point was driven
home to me rather forcefully not long ago by a letter
I received which said: "Darling, I love you, and I cannot
live without you. Marry me, or I will kill myself."
Well, I was a little disturbed at that until I took
another look at the envelope, and saw that it was
addressed to occupant...
Speaking of love, one problem that recurs more and more
frequently these days, in books and plays and movies,
is the inability of people to communicate with the people
they love: husbands and wives who can't communicate,
children who can't communicate with their parents, and so on.
And the characters in these books and plays and so on,
and in real life, I might add, spend hours bemoaning the
fact that they can't communicate. I feel that if a
person can't communicate, the very least he can do
is to shut up!

Am letzten 13. Dezember erschien in den Zeitungen der saftigste,
pikanteste, rassigste Nachruf, den ich je zu lesen das Vergnügen hatte.
Es war der einer Dame namens Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel, die es geschafft hatte,
zeit ihres Lebens praktisch alle
führenden kreativen Männer Mitteleuropas als Liebhaber zu gewinnen. Und unter diesen Liebhabern,
die übrigens im Nachruf aufgelistet waren, was ihn so
interessant machte, gab es drei, die sie sogar
heiratete: Einen der führenden Komponisten der Zeit, Gustav Mahler,
Komponist von "Das Lied von der Erde" und anderen leichten Klassikern,
einen der führenden Architekten, Walter Gropius, von der "Bauhaus
Schule für Gestaltung", und einen der führenden Schriftsteller, Franz Werfel,
Autor des "Lieds von Bernadette" und anderer Meisterwerke.
Es sind Leute wie sie, die einem klarmachen, wie wenig man selbst
erreicht hat. Es ist ein ernüchternder Gedanke, zum Beispiel, dass
Mozart in meinem Alter schon zwei Jahre tot war!
Mir schien beim Lesen dieses Nachrufs, dass die Geschichte
von Alma der Stoff ist, aus dem Balladen gemacht sein sollten,
also hier ist eine:

Das schönste Mädchen in Wien
War Alma, die klügste obendrein,
Hattest du sie erst mal auf deiner Antenne,
Warst du auf ewig in ihrem Banne.
Ihre Liebhaber war'n zahlreich und verschieden
Seit dem Tag, als ihr Reigen begann.
Drei Berühmte gab es, die sie heiratete dann,
Und Gott weiß, wie viele dazwischen noch dran...

Alma, sag uns doch,
Alle modernen Frauen sind neidisch noch,.
Welcher deiner Zauberstäbe
Brachte dir Gustav und Walter und Franz?

Den ersten, den sie heiratete, war Mahler
Dessen Kumpels ihn alle als Gustav kannten.
Und jedes Mal, wenn er sie sah, tat er johlen,
"Ach, das ist das Fräulein, das ich haben muss!"
Ihre Ehe jedoch war ein Graus.
Er schrie zum Himmel hinauf,
"Ich schreibe 'Das Lied von der Erde',
Und sie will immer nur Liebe machen!"

Alma, sag uns doch,
Alle modernen Frauen sind neidisch noch,
Du solltest eine Statue in Bronze kriegen
Dafür, dass du Gustav und Walter und Franz erlegtest.

Während der Ehe mit Gus traf sie Gropius,
Und bald schwang sie mit Walter das Tanzbein.
Gus starb und ihre Tränen flossen reichlich.
Sie weinte den ganzen Weg bis zum Altar.
Doch er arbeitete spät im Bauhaus
Und kam nur noch ab und zu nach Haus.
Sie sagte: "Was betreibe ich hier, eine Garküche?
Es ist Zeit, die Partner wieder zu wechseln!"

Alma, sag uns doch,
Alle modernen Frauen sind neidisch noch!
Obwohl du nicht mal Ponds benutzt hast,
Hast du Gustav und Walter und Franz gekriegt.

Während der Ehe mit Walt traf sie Werfel,
Und auch er ging ihr ins Netz.
Er heiratete sie, aber er war vorsichtig,
Denn Alma war keine Bernadette.
Und das ist die Geschichte von Alma
Die zu nehmen und zu geben wusste.
Der Körper, der ihren Einbalsamierer erreichte
War einer, der zu leben gewusst hatte!

Alma, sag uns doch,
Wie könnten sie nicht neidisch sein?
Enten beneiden immer die Schwäne
Die Gustav und Walter kriegen,
Du hast niemals gezögert
Mit Gustav und Walter und Franz!

Ich weiß, manche Leute meinen, die Ehe als Institution
stirbt aus, aber da bin ich anderer Meinung. Und das wurde mir
ziemlich eindringlich vor nicht allzu langer Zeit durch einen Brief klargemacht,
den ich erhielt, in dem stand: "Liebling, ich liebe dich, und ich kann nicht
ohne dich leben. Heirate mich, oder ich bringe mich um."
Nun, das hat mich etwas beunruhigt, bis ich einen
weiteren Blick auf den Umschlag warf und sah, dass er
an "Hausbewohner" adressiert war...
Wo wir gerade von Liebe sprechen, ein Problem, das immer häufiger
auftaucht heutzutage, in Büchern, Theaterstücken und Filmen,
ist die Unfähigkeit von Menschen, mit den Menschen zu kommunizieren,
die sie lieben: Ehemänner und Ehefrauen, die nicht kommunizieren können,
Kinder, die nicht mit ihren Eltern kommunizieren können, und so weiter.
Und die Charaktere in diesen Büchern und Stücken und so weiter,
und im wirklichen Leben, möchte ich hinzufügen, verbringen Stunden damit, die Tatsache zu beklagen,
dass sie nicht kommunizieren können. Ich finde, wenn eine
Person nicht kommunizieren kann, ist das Mindeste, was sie tun kann,
den Mund zu halten!
