N'ayant nageoires, ni écailles,
Ni d'un poisson même des dents,
Yann remonte, pris dans les mailles
De son filet, un squelette d'argent.
Il gèle il gèle à roche fendre,
Sous la morsure de l'aquilon.
A dos Yann vite de prendre
Le filet d'os, vers sa maison.
Bien grande alors est sa surprise
Quand le squelette rampe à tâtons,
Et vers l'âtre se dirige,
S'y réchauffer auprès des tisons.
Les os se couvrent de chair de femme
Qui chante alors douce chanson,
Et au fil des couplets gagne
Tête et cheveux, lèvres et poumons.
D'une naïade elle prend la grâce
Et d'une nymphe la fraîcheur.
Elle étreint Yann et l'enlace:
D'un mauvais sort tu es mon sauveur.
Puis dans son lit la belle entraîne
Yann au triomphe de l'amour,
Pour cent nuits, on m'a dit même
Qu'ils s'aimeront pendant trois-mille ans.

The Enchanted Beauty

Having neither fins nor scales,
Nor even the teeth of a fish,
Yann pulls in, caught in the mesh
Of his net, a silvery skeleton.
It is freezing cold, enough to split rocks,
Under the bite of the north wind.
Yann quickly takes the net of bones
On his back, towards his house.
How great then is his surprise
When the skeleton crawls on all fours,
And heads towards the hearth,
To warm itself by the embers.
The bones become covered in the flesh of a woman
Who then sings a sweet song,
And with each verse gains
A head and hair, lips and lungs.
She takes on the grace of a naiad
And the freshness of a nymph.
She embraces and hugs Yann:
From an evil spell you are my savior.
Then the beauty leads Yann to her bed
In the triumph of love,
For a hundred nights, or so I'm told
They will love each other for three thousand years.
