Le Dauphin

Sur la lande déserte, une femme fredonne,
Pour son enfant et pour elle aussi:
Je connais ton père petit bonhomme,
Il vit très loin, très loin d′ici...

Un soir de tempête il est entré,
Mon Dieu la tête qu'il avait,
Il dit s′asseyant sur le lit:
C'est moi le père du petit.

Je suis un homme sur la terre,
Je suis un dauphin dans la mer,
Je vis très loin, très loin d'ici,
Dans le courant du Sule Skerry.

Jetant sur la table une bourse d′or,
Il dit: voilà pour ton effort,
Quant au petit, dès aujourd′hui,
Il faut te séparer de lui.

Je viendrais le prendre un soir à la brume
Quand le ciel s'accroche aux filets meurtris
Et lui apprendrais à prendre l′écume,
Comme mon père me l'avait appris.

Un marin pêcheur tu épouseras,
Des harponneurs le plus adroit,
Et le premier coup qu′il décochera
Tuera mon fils, mon fils et moi.

The Dolphin

I'm a man on the earth,
I'm a dolphin in the sea,
I live very far, very far from here,
In the current of the Sule Skerry.

Throwing a purse of gold on the table,
He said, here's for your effort,
As for the little one, from today,
You must part with him.

I'll come and get him one foggy evening
When the sky hangs on the bruised nets
And teach him to skim the foam,
As my father had taught me.

You will marry a fisherman,
The most skilled of harpooners,
And the first shot he fires
Will kill my son, my son and me.
