Hier möcht′ man manchmal wie der Wind
So große Schritte haben.

Hier sehnt man sich nach Hinterhof
Und dem Kino um die Ecke,
Nach Häuserwänden mit "Hans ist doof"
Und einer Ginsterhecke.
Nach dem Briefträger auf dem Rad
Und Zeit zum Briefeschreiben
Und nach dem Wirtshaus,
Das gut dran tat, sich selber treu zu bleiben.

Hier möcht' ich gerne im Höhenflug
über die Dächer fliegen,
Doch ich weiß, ich bin nicht stark genug,
Die Stadt hier zu besiegen.

Here I unpacked my suitcases,
Without pitching a tent,
Because this city has no face,
That invites you to linger;
The streets here don't rhyme
Like other good lines.

The houses here are self-assured
And tend to be exaggerated,
And one simply has no desire,

Here one wouldn't even like to be a child
And also not like to be buried,

To have such big steps.

Here one yearns for the backyard
And the cinema around the corner,
For house walls with "Hans is stupid"
And a gorse hedge.
For the mailman on his bike
And time to write letters
And for the inn,
That was good at being true to itself.

Here I would like to fly up high
Over the rooftops,
But I know I'm not strong enough,
To defeat this city.
