La mamma morta
M'hanno alla porta della stanza mia;
Moriva e mi salvava!
Poi a notte alta
Io con Bersi errava,

La cupa via! Guardo!
Bruciava il loco di mia culla!
Così fui sola! E intorno il nulla!
Fame e miseria! Il bisogno, il periglio!
Caddi malata,
E Bersi, buona e pura, di sua bellezza
Ha fatto un mercato, un contratto per me!
Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole!

(Ad un tratto, nelle pupille di Maddalena
Si effonde una luce di suprema gioia)

Fu in quel dolore che a me venne l'amor!
Voce piena d'armonia e dice:
"Vivi ancora! Io son la vita!
Ne' miei occhi è il tuo cielo!
Tu non sei sola!
Le lacrime tue io le raccolgo!
Io sto sul tuo cammino e ti sorreggo!

Tutto intorno è sangue e fango?

Apareció y aclaró ante mis pasos
El oscuro camino. ¡Miro!
¡Mi hogar estaba en llamas!

¡Hambre y miseria! ¡La necesidad, el peligro!
¡Caí enferma!
Y Bersi, buena y pura, traficó,

MADDALENA
My mother died
At the door of my room;
She died, and she saved me!
Then, late at night
I wandered with Bersi,
When suddenly a livid glow
Flashed and lit up the path before me
The dark street! I looked!
The place of my birth was burning!
Thus I was alone! And around me nothing!
Hunger and misery! The need, the danger!
I fell sick,
And Bersi, good and pure, with her beauty
She made a trade, a deal for me!
I bring misfortune to those who love me!

(Suddenly, in Maddalena's eyes
A light of supreme joy is poured out)

It was in that grief that love came to me!
A voice full of harmony says:
"You still live! I am life!
In my eyes is your heaven!
You are not alone!
I gather your tears!
I stand in your path and support you!
Smile and hope! I am love!
Is everything around blood and mud?
I am divine! I am oblivion!
I am the god who over the world
Descends from the empyrean,
Makes a heaven on earth!
Ah! I am love, I am love, love"
And the angel approaches,
Kisses, and when he kisses, he kisses death!
My body is the body of a dying woman.
So take it. I am already dead!

They killed my mother
