Doch, königstreu, erkannt′ es schnell, ist es nicht ständig breit
Hat es zum Schaffen und zum Zahl′n tatsächlich viel mehr Zeit

Bald, doch klarte wahrlich auf, des einfachs Mann Verstand
Und plötzlich ging ein Raunen voll Erstaunen durch das Land
Ja, durchs ganze Volke lief ein Rücken und ein Ruckeln
Und jeder fragte nach dem Sinn vom Bücken und vom Buckeln

Es brodelte verdächtig laut, was all das Schinden soll
Und mancher schrie Scheiß Monarchie, ich hab die Schnauze voll!

Unser König merkte schnell, dass hier sein Plan zerbrach
Das Volk war zwar nicht trunken, doch viel schlimmer als danach
So musste er wollt' er noch lang regieren reagieren
Und ließ die Truppen schwerbepackt durchs ganze Reich marschieren

Dort holten sie denn allerorts die Punschreserven raus
Und riefen Auf die Freiheit! Unser König gibt ein′ aus!

So hatte unser König grade noch das Blatt gewendet
Ja, und ihr könnt euch denken wie nun die Geschichte endet
Es gab natürlich eine große Volksfeierlichkeit
Und hernach war das Volk dem Freiheitswahn freilich befreit

Und unser König hat erkannt, was wohl noch heute gilt
Nur wenn das Volk dumm und berauscht ist, ist es auch gewillt

Punch instead of Coup

There once was a king, my dear, who had a peculiar plan,
He himself preferred to call it a "people's detox plan".
He thought if he forbade beer and wine, things would be better for his own kind,
And, as a side effect, bring more wealth to the kingdom's crown.

For he reasoned, if his people weren't constantly drunk,
They'd fulfill their work and tax duties with greater spunk.

So, one day, he banned all the lovely things,
That make men and women wonderfully drunk, like angels with wings.
Thus, the people were once again deprived of joy and their right,
No longer falling-down drunk, but simply filled with fright.

Yet, loyal to the king, they quickly realized, without being constantly soused,
They indeed had much more time for work and paying dues that aroused.

Soon, however, the common man's mind became clear,
And suddenly a murmur of astonishment spread far and near.
Yes, a tremor and a jolt ran through the entire nation,
And everyone questioned the meaning of their toil and taxation.

It simmered suspiciously loud, questioning the purpose of their plight,
And some cried out, "Damn the monarchy, I've had enough of this shite!"

Our king quickly realized his plan had gone astray,
The people weren't drunk, but far worse, in a rebellious way.
So, if he wanted to reign for long, he had to take action,
And sent the troops, heavily laden, marching throughout the nation.

There, they brought out the punch reserves from every nook and cranny,
And shouted, "To freedom! Our king is offering a free fanny!"

Thus, our king had just barely turned the tide,
And you can imagine how the story now will confide.
There was, of course, a grand national festivity,
And afterwards, the people were freed from the madness of liberty.

And our king realized what still holds true today,
Only when the people are dumb and intoxicated, will they obey.
