Soy un toro destacado

Untándome de buñiga todita la palomilla
Ya no vale ni cuartilla
Aquél que fuera ejemplar
Aquí, y en cualquier lugar.
Yo varias plazas cubrí
A mil jinetes tumbé.
Con la capa acometí
Y con la pica topé.
Varias reatas reventé
De las trancas me burlé
Los lienzos no respeté
Y a donde quiera que fuí
Muy buena fama senté.
La vaca que galanteara
Para ponerla en calor
No hubo otro toro mejor
Que disputármela osara.
Por tener grueso el morrillo
Y mis cuernos tan puntales
Los vacunos sementales
Me declararon Caudillo.
Mis amos me presumían
Los vaqueros me temían
Quienes mi fama admiraron
En corridos lo cantaron.
Nadie me trataba mal
Pasé de ser buen semental
Produje apreciables crías
Y el que pasara sus días
Tan arrogante y ladino
De pelo brillante y fino
Tan altivo, infatigable
Esgrimiendo siempre el sable
Con destreza y con valor
Como el mejor gladiador
Ahora se espanta si ladra un perro.
Me reta cualquier becerro
Y a ese reto rehuyo
Ya se acabó mi orgullo
Perdí aquella vanidad
Que nunca fué necedad
Y a fuerza de hacer alarde
Cuando allá de tarde en tarde
Siento que el cuerpo me pide
Poner una vaca en gesta
La requiero y me detesta
Y con desdén me despide
Sintiéndose hasta molesta.
El tiempo inexorable
No da vigor perdurable.
Mis astas se resecaron
Mis pitones se astillaron
Aunque en rico pasto agosto
Cada día soy más angosto
Inútil, menos pesado
Ya me siento muy cansado
Y con dificultad camino
Más clama mi destino
Un detalle siempre grato
Ver pendiente mi retrato
Y con gran satisfacción
En mi generación
De tal placer no me privo
Es mi único lenitivo
Con satisfacción lo digo
Y por ello, a Dios bendigo.
Cuando apartan las vaquillas
Blancas, pintas, aguilillas
Propias para el apareo
Tan robustas y coquetas
Melancólico las veo
Y me relamo las jetas
En ellas mis ojos fijo
Admitiendo en mis secretos
Que las fecunden mis hijos
Mientras que crecen mis nietos.
Ahora en tiempos fríos
Recorriendo los vaqueros
Toditos los criaderos
A unos compañeros míos
Cortaron de sus vacadas
Condujeron al corral
Allí dijo el caporal:
Que por tanto haber vivido
No cumplen su cometido
Procedamos a castrarlos
A la engorda incorporarlos
Y antes de los fríos de enero
Mandarlos al matadero.
Y con ellos me acotejo
Soy de su edad, o más viejo
De escapar no encuentro medio
Y no tengo mas remedio
Que correr la misma suerte
Castración, engorda y muerte.
Por ello es que escabullido
Vivo solo, apartado
Metido en una cañada
En el fondo amogotado
En lo hondo de escondida encrucijada
Cortado de mi vacada
Y pidiendo al Supremo Ser
Ya que eterno no he de ser
No permita que me humillen
A mí, que no me anovillen
Aunque vaya al matadero
Yo prefiero en mis mogotes
Ser pasto de zopilotes
Pero sí, morir entero.
Es mi caso y con prudencia
Juzgo con resignación
Mala la comparación
Pero poca, muy poca
La diferencia.

Soliloquy of an Old Bull

I'm a distinguished bull,
Living all alone,
Secluded in a canyon,
Deep down, feeling downcast,
In the depths of a hidden crossroads.
I no longer mean anything,
I stray from my herds,
My Aprils have turned
Into a harsh winter.
I no longer bellow, I no longer charge,
My courage has run dry,
I approach the watering hole with fear,
Cowardly, I eat less.
I no longer cover my back with clay,
Scraping it from the earth,
Bellowing and seeking a fight,
Raging with fatigue,
Smearing my whole body with dung.
He who was once exemplary,
Here and everywhere,
Is not worth a dime anymore.
I covered several plazas,
I threw a thousand riders.
I charged with the cape,
And I met the picador's lance.
I broke several ropes,
I mocked the barriers,
I disrespected the fences,
And wherever I went,
I built a good reputation.
The cow that I courted,

And my horns so sharp,
The breeding bulls,

My masters bragged about me,
