Les arbres du Sud portent un étrange fruit,
Du sang sur les feuilles et du sang aux racines,
Un corps noir se balance dans la brise du Sud,
Étrange fruit suspendu aux peupliers.
Scène pastorale du valeureux Sud,
Les yeux exorbités et la bouche tordue,
Parfum de magnolia doux et frais,
Puis l′odeur soudaine de chair brûlante!
C'est un fruit que les corbeaux cueillent,
Que la pluie rassemble, que les arbres lâchent
C′est là une étrange et amère récolte.

The trees of the South bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the roots,
A black body sways in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from poplars.
Pastoral scene of the valiant South,
Bulging eyes and crooked mouth,
Sweet and fresh magnolia fragrance,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh!
This is a fruit that crows pick,
Let the rain gather, let the trees let go
This is a strange and bitter harvest.
