Now when i was a lad and old shep was a pup,
Over hills and valleys we strayed
Just a boy and his dog we were both full of fun
We growed up together that way
I remember the time at the old swimming hole
I would have drowned beyond doubt
But old shep was right there to the rescue he came
And he jumped in and helped dragged me out
Now the years rolled along and at last he grew old
His eyesight was fast growing dim
Then one day the doctor looked at me and said
I cant do no more for him jim
So with trembling hand i picked up my gun
And aimed it at sheps faithful head
But i just couldnt do it i wanted to run
I wished they would shoot me instead
So i threw down that old gun and run right up to his side
He laid his fathful old head right on my knee
And friends i stroked the best pal a man ever found
And i even cried so i scarcely could see
Now old shep he knew he was going to go
Cause he reached down and licked at my hand
And he looked up at me just as much as to say
I hate it to but you understand
Now old shep is gone where the good doggys go
And no more with old shep will i roam
But if dogs have a heaven there is one thing i know
Old shep has a wonderful home

Le vieux Shep

Tu sais, quand j'étais un gamin et que le vieux Shep était un chiot,
On errait sur les collines et dans les vallées,
Juste un garçon et son chien, on était tous les deux pleins d'entrain.
On a grandi ensemble comme ça.
Je me souviens du temps où on allait au trou de baignade.
J'aurais pu me noyer sans aucun doute.
Mais le vieux Shep était là pour me sauver.
Il a sauté à l'eau et m'a tiré vers le haut.
Les années ont défilé et il a fini par vieillir.
Sa vue s'est affaiblie rapidement.
Puis un jour, le docteur m'a regardé et a dit:
Je ne peux plus rien faire pour lui, Jim.
Alors, d'une main tremblante, j'ai pris mon fusil.
Et je l'ai pointé vers la tête fidèle de Shep.
Mais je n'ai pas pu le faire. J'avais envie de courir.
J'aurais voulu qu'ils me tirent dessus à la place.
Alors j'ai jeté ce vieux fusil et j'ai couru à ses côtés.
Il a posé sa tête fidèle sur mon genou.
Et mon ami, j'ai caressé le meilleur ami que l'homme ait jamais trouvé.
J'ai même pleuré, j'avais à peine la vue.
Le vieux Shep savait qu'il allait partir.
Il a baissé la tête et m'a léché la main.
Il m'a regardé comme pour dire:
Je déteste ça, mais tu comprends.
Le vieux Shep est parti là où vont les bons chiens.
Je ne vagabonderai plus avec le vieux Shep.
Mais si les chiens ont un paradis, je sais une chose.
Le vieux Shep a un foyer magnifique.
