I walked thru the grave yard
I noticed this man kneeling down by the grave of a child
And in his hand he held a big red rose and tears were streaming down his cheeks
I walked over and laid a hand on his shoulder and started to talk to him
And during the course of our conversation and in his broken English
This is the story just as he told it to me He said to me Mister
I've walked down the street today And I passed about the big flower shop
I walked in and I asked the man in the shop
I said boss how much is for one red rose
Then he looked at me with one big frown and he says it's one dollar please
But in a buyin' buyer was well dressed blonde lady walked in And she says how much is for one red rose
And he looked at her with one big smile and he says ten cents Now I said boss how come to you to charge me a dollar for the rose
And you charged the young lady only ten cents Then he said look Mister you tell me why you want the rose
And maybe I give it to you for not I said boss I'm a hard working man working a railroad and only make three dollars a day
And I got a little girl and her name was Rosa o Rosa's just about this high boss Every day when I'd come home from the work
A little Rosa come running to meet her papa
And she'd throw her little arms around my neck and say papa and I'd say Rosa
But one day boss I've come home from the work I don't see Rosa
I looked down by the railroad track and I see one big crowd I'd go down and
I pushed the crowd this a way and pushed the crowd that a way
There was at my feet lay my little Rosa and that's why
I want the rose boss I wanna put it on little Rosa's grave
Then man he didn't say not but he picked the biggest and the reddest rose
And he gave it to me And I said thank you boss thank you very much

And though she's gone you see she's still the world to me
To me she'll always be that little girl of mine

Petite Rosa était son nom et je pleure toujours en vain
Mon mot ne sera plus le même depuis qu'elle est partie de moi

Je suis allé visiter la tombe d'un ami à moi et comme
Je me promenais dans le cimetière
J'ai remarqué cet homme agenouillé près de la tombe d'un enfant
Et dans sa main, il tenait une grosse rose rouge et des larmes coulaient sur ses joues
Je me suis approché et j'ai posé une main sur son épaule et j'ai commencé à lui parler
Et au cours de notre conversation et dans son anglais hésitant
Voici l'histoire telle qu'il me l'a racontée Il m'a dit Monsieur
J'ai marché dans la rue aujourd'hui et je suis passé devant un grand magasin de fleurs
J'y suis entré et j'ai demandé au vendeur
J'ai dit patron, combien coûte une rose rouge
Alors il m'a regardé avec un grand froncement de sourcils et il a dit c'est un dollar s'il vous plaît
Mais une jeune femme blonde élégante est entrée et a dit combien coûte une rose rouge
Et il l'a regardée avec un grand sourire et il a dit dix cents Maintenant j'ai dit patron pourquoi tu me fais payer un dollar pour la rose
Et tu as fait payer à la jeune femme seulement dix cents Alors il a dit écoute Monsieur, dis-moi pourquoi tu veux la rose
Et peut-être que je te la donnerai ou pas J'ai dit patron, je suis un homme qui travaille dur, je travaille au chemin de fer et je ne gagne que trois dollars par jour
Et j'ai une petite fille et elle s'appelait Rosa oh Rosa est à peu près de cette taille patron Chaque jour quand je rentrais du travail
La petite Rosa courait à la rencontre de son papa
Et elle me serrait dans ses petits bras et disait papa et je disais Rosa
Mais un jour patron je suis rentré du travail et je n'ai pas vu Rosa
