Ah this text written in collaboration with Kels Elvens in 1938 commemorates the first appearance with Dr. Benway. It's called em, 'Twilights Last Gleamings'.

SS America off Jersey coast. Ladies and Gentlemen there is no cause for alarm. We have a minor problem in the boiler room, but everything is now under the sound effects of a nuclear blast.
Explosion splits the boat.
Dr. Benway, ships doctor, drunkenly added two inches to a four inch incision with one stroke of his scalpel.
'Perhaps the appendix is already out doctor?' The nurse said.
Appearing dubiously over his shoulder, 'I saw a little scar'
'The appendix already out!'
'I'm taking the appendix out!'
'What do you think I'm doing here?!'
'Perhaps the appendix is on the left side doctor that happens sometimes you know!'
'Stop breathing down my neck I'm coming to that.'
'Don't you think I know where an appendix is?'
'I studied appendectomy in 1904 at Harvard'
He lifts the abdominal wall and searches around the incision dropping ashes from his cigarette.
'Get me a new scalpel; this one's got no edge to it!'
He thrusts a red fist at her. The doctor reels back and flattens against the wall, a bloody scalpel clutched in one hand. The patient slides off the operating table spilling intestines across the floor.
Dr. Benway sweeps instruments, cocaine and morphine into his satchel.
'Sew her up, I can't be expected to work under such conditions!'
By the dawns early light, Dr. Benway pushed through a crowd at the rail and boarded the first flight croak.
'Are you alright?' he said, seating himself amongst the women, 'I'm the doctor'

Ah, dieser Text, geschrieben in Zusammenarbeit mit Kels Elvens im Jahr 1938, erinnert an den ersten Auftritt von Dr. Benway. Er heißt, ähm, 'Zwielichts letztes Schimmern'.

SS America vor der Küste von Jersey. Meine Damen und Herren, es gibt keinen Grund zur Beunruhigung. Wir haben ein kleines Problem im Kesselraum, aber alles steht jetzt unter den Geräuscheffekten einer nuklearen Explosion.
Explosion zerreißt das Schiff.
Dr. Benway, Schiffsarzt, verlängerte betrunken einen vier Zoll langen Schnitt mit einem Zug seines Skalpells um zwei Zoll.
'Vielleicht ist der Blinddarm schon draußen, Doktor?', sagte die Krankenschwester.
Zweifelnd über seine Schulter blickend: 'Ich sah eine kleine Narbe.'
'Der Blinddarm schon draußen!'
'Ich nehme den Blinddarm raus!'
'Was glauben Sie, was ich hier mache?!'
'Vielleicht ist der Blinddarm auf der linken Seite, Doktor, das passiert manchmal, wissen Sie!'
'Hören Sie auf, mir im Nacken zu sitzen! Ich komme schon noch dazu.'
'Glauben Sie nicht, dass ich weiß, wo ein Blinddarm ist?'
'Ich habe 1904 in Harvard Appendektomie studiert.'
Er hebt die Bauchdecke an und sucht um die Inzision herum, während Asche von seiner Zigarette fällt.
'Bringen Sie mir ein neues Skalpell; dieses hier ist stumpf!'
Er stößt mit roter Faust auf sie zu. Der Doktor taumelt zurück und presst sich an die Wand, ein blutiges Skalpell in einer Hand umklammert. Die Patientin rutscht vom Operationstisch, ihre Eingeweide ergießen sich auf den Boden.
Dr. Benway rafft Instrumente, Kokain und Morphium in seine Arzttasche.
'Nähen Sie sie zu, man kann nicht von mir erwarten, unter solchen Bedingungen zu arbeiten!'
Im frühen Licht der Morgendämmerung drängte sich Dr. Benway durch eine Menge an der Reling und bestieg das erste Rettungsboot.
'Geht es Ihnen gut?', sagte er, während er sich zwischen die Frauen setzte, 'Ich bin der Arzt.'
