Der Ehstand ist ein Himmelreich

Es trifft ja kaum neun Monat an,
Da dreht sich schon der Wind;
Da zankt das Weib, da schimpft der Mann,
Es kommt ein Wickelkind.
Da brummt das Weib als wie ein Bär,
Das Kind gibt auch kein Fried;
Da heißt's: nimms Wiegenbändel her
Und sing ein Wiegenlied!
Der Ehstand ist ein g'mischte Speis,
Halb sauer und halb süß;
Oft komm′n die Kinder haufenweis,
Da heißt′s: setz dich auf d' Fuß′!
Da schrein die Plagen: qua, qua, qua,
Die Ohren tun ei'm weh;
Der Mann lauft fort zum Biere da,
Und ′s Weib sauft brav Kaffee.
Der Kinder hab' ich nicht zu viel,
Es sind nicht mehr als zwölf!
Und bei der Nacht da heulen sie
Und fressen wie die Wolf.
Nun jetzund hat der Spaß ein End′;
Die Lichter löscht man aus;
Der Bräut'gam macht das Kompliment
Und führt die Braut nach Haus.

The Joys of Marriage

A wedding is, upon my word,
A foolish, silly thing!
You eat and drink until you're full,
It's all just dance and spring!
Six weeks go by in dreamy haze,
You're deaf and blind it seems;
The married pair are one in heart,
It's "darling" and "sweet dreams!"
You act in foolish, playful ways;
You live, you don't know how;
Marriage is a paradise
And pure harmony, wow!
But barely nine months come to pass,
The wind begins to shift;
The wife she nags, the husband scolds,
A baby comes, a gift.
The wife she grumbles like a bear,
The child brings no peace too;
It's "grab the cradle strap, my dear,
And sing a lullaby, boo-hoo!"
Marriage is a mixed-up dish,
Half sour and half sweet;
The kids they come in droves, it seems,
It's "sit down on your feet!"
The little pests cry, "wah, wah, wah,"
Your ears begin to ache;
The man runs off to get some beer,
And the wife, coffee she'll make.
I don't have too many kids,
There's only just twelve, see!
And in the night they howl and cry
And eat like wolves, all three!
Now finally the fun is done;
The lights are turned out low;
The groom he makes his compliments,
And leads the bride to go.
