Bao năm xa nhà nay về thăm lại quê hương
Đường làng quanh co gió lưng chừng nắng ngang đầu ngọn tre
Xạc xào từng tàu lá trên bến sông nghe nhớ thương trong lòng
Ngày xưa dáng mẹ lưng còng giữa trời bão giông.

Tấm lá mẹ chầm đêm ngày đâu ngại gian lao
Chèo xuồng trên sông chặt từng tàu chẻ từng cây hom
Chầm nên tấm lá che mái nhà xiêu trước dột sau
Và lo cho các con ăn học ngày sau nên người.

Tấm lá của mẹ kết bằng tuổi xuân nửa oá
Nặng ghánh trên vai tháng ngày cùng bao đắng cay
Lá về muôn nơi lá che bóng mát cho đời
Bấy nhiêu tấm lá là bao tình mẹ dành cho con.

Như cánh chim trời bay về từ miền xa xôi
Tàu lá xanh xao úa màu còn chăng nỗi đau
Thắm mặn bờ môi nỗi buồn rớt trong âm thầm
Tấm lá mẹ chầm che mát đời con mẹ ơi!

Mother's Leaf

After so many years away from home, I have returned to visit my village.
The village path is winding; a breeze blows and the sun sets on the bamboo groves.
The noise of the leaves on the riverbank fills my heart with longing,
I remember my mother's stooped figure working in the storm.

Mother's leaves, all day and night, through the cold and pain,
Rowing a boat on the river, cutting wood into even planks,
Slowly making the leaves that would shield the house from the rain,
And so that one day her children would go to school and become successful.

My mother's leaf is made of her half-faded youth,
A heavy burden that she carried through years of hardship and pain,
The leaf travels far and wide, giving shade to all who pass by,
Each leaf is a symbol of the love my mother has for her child.

Like a bird that has flown from distant lands,
The leaf is now faded and yellow, but the pain remains,
The salty taste of tears falls silently onto my lips,
My mother's leaf protects me from the heat, my mother oh my!
