Вот иду я, заморский страус, в перьях строф, размеров и рифм.
Спрятать голову, глупый, стараюсь, в оперенье звенящее врыв.
Я не твой, снеговая уродина. Глубже в перья, душа, уложись!
И иная окажется родина, вижу - выжжена южная жизнь.
Остров зноя. В пальмы овазился. "Эй, дорогу!" Выдумку мнут.
И опять до другого оазиса вью следы песками минут.
Иные жмутся - уйти б, не кусается ль? - Иные изогнуты в низкую лесть.
"Мама, а мама, несет он яйца?" - "Не знаю, душечка. Должен бы несть".
Ржут этажия. Улицы пялятся. Обдают водой холода.
Весь истыканный в дымы и в пальцы, переваливаю года
Что ж, бери меня хваткой мёрзкой! Бритвой ветра перья обрей.
Пусть исчезну, чужой и заморский, под неистовство всех декабрей.
Я хочу быть понят моей страной, а не буду понят, - что ж,
По родной стране пройду стороной, как проходит косой дождь.

To Russia… I want my country to understand me…

Here I come, an overseas ostrich, in feathers of stanzas, meters, and rhymes.
I try to hide my head, you silly, in the ringing plumage of a poem.
I am not yours, you snowy monster. Deeper into the feathers, my soul, lay down!
And a different homeland will appear, I see - the southern life is scorched.
An island of heat. I am hidden in the palm trees. "Hey, make way!" They trample on my invention.
And again, to another oasis, I wind my way through the sands of the minutes.
Some cower away - will it bite? - Others bow low in flattery.
"Mother, mother, does it lay eggs?" - "I don't know, my dear. It probably should."
The floors laugh. The streets stare. They douse me with the water of the cold.
All pricked with smoke and fingers, I roll through the years
Well, take me with your cold grip! Shave my feathers with the razor of the wind.
Let me disappear, a stranger and an alien, under the fury of all Decembers.
I want my country to understand me, and if I'm not understood, so be it,
I'll pass by my native land as a slanting rain passes by.
