Змеи, змеи кругом, будь им пусто!-
Человек в иступленьи кричал.
И позвал на подмогу мангуста,
Чтобы, значит, мангуст выручал.
И мангусты взялись за работу,
Не щадя ни себя, ни родных.
Выходили они на охоту
Без отгулов и выходных.
И в пустынях, степях и в пампасах
Дали люди наказ патрулям -
Игнорировать змей безопасных
И сводить ядовитых к нулям.
Приготовьтесь, сейчас будет грустно...
Человек появился тайком
И поставил силки на мангуста,
Объявив его вредным зверьком.
Он наутро пришел, с ним - собака,
И мангуста упрятал в мешок.
А мангуст отбивался и плакал,
И кричал - Я полезный зверек!
Но зверьков в переломах и ранах,
Все швыряли в мешок, как грибы,
Одуревших от боли в капканах,
Ну, и от поворота судьбы.
И гадали они:"В чем же дело?
Почему нас несут на убой?"
И сказал им мангуст престарелый
С перебитой передней ногой:
- Козы в Бельгии съели капусту,
Воробьи - рис в Китае с полей,
А в Австралии злые мангусты
Истребили полезнейших змей.-
Это вовсе не дивное диво:
Раньше были полезны, и вдруг
Оказалось, что слишком ретиво
Истребляли мангусты гадюк.
Вот за это им вышла награда
От расчетливых наших людей.
Видно, люди не могут без яда,
Ну, а значит, не могут без змей.
И снова змеи кругом...
Будь им пусто!

"Snakes, snakes everywhere, damn them all!" -
A man screamed in a frenzy's thrall.
He called for a mongoose's aid,
To rescue him, so it was said.
And the mongooses got to work,
Sparing neither themselves nor their kin.
They went out on the hunt, a perk,
Without days off or weekends within.
And in deserts, steppes, and pampas vast,
People gave the patrols a command -
To ignore snakes that were harmless, fast,
And reduce venomous ones to sand.
Get ready, dear, it's about to get blue...
A man appeared in the shadows dim,
And set traps for the mongoose crew,
Declaring them a harmful whim.
He came back in the morning light,
With his dog, and a sack in his hand.
And the mongoose fought and cried with might,
"I'm a useful creature, understand!"
But the creatures, with broken bones and wounds,
Were thrown into the sack like fallen leaves,
Driven mad by the pain of cruel wounds,
And the twist of fate that deceives.
And they wondered, "What's the reason why?
Why are we being carried to our doom?"
And an elderly mongoose did reply,
With a broken front leg in the gloom:
"- Goats in Belgium ate the cabbage patch,
Sparrows - rice in China's fields so grand,
And in Australia, mongooses' catch,
Was the extermination of snakes so bland.-"
It's not a wondrous thing to see:
They were useful before, and then in a blink,
It turned out they were too eagerly
Exterminating vipers, quick as a wink.
So for this, they received their reward,
From our calculating human kind.
It seems people can't live without the mordant cord,
So, it means, they can't leave snakes behind."
And again snakes are all around...
Damn them all to the ground!
