Марионетки

Лица стерты, краски тусклы —
То ли люди, то ли куклы,
Взгляд похож на взгляд,
А тень — на тень.
И я устал и, отдыхая,
В балаган вас приглашаю,
Где куклы так похожи на людей.
Арлекины и пираты,
Циркачи и акробаты,
И злодей, чей вид внушает страх,
Волк и заяц, тигры в клетке —
Все они марионетки
В ловких и натруженных руках.
Кукол дергают за нитки,
На лице у них улыбки,
И играет клоун на трубе.
И в процессе представленья
Создается впечатленье,
Что куклы пляшут сами по себе.
Ах, до чего ж порой обидно,
Что хозяина не видно:
Вверх и в темноту уходит нить.
А куклы так ему послушны,
И мы верим простодушно
В то, что кукла может говорить.
Но вот хозяин гасит свечи —
Кончен бал и кончен вечер,
Засияет месяц в облаках...
И кукол снимут с нитки длинной
И, засыпав нафталином,
В виде тряпок сложат в сундуках.

Marionettes

Faces are worn, colors are dim,
Are they people or just puppets?
Their gaze resembles a gaze,
And their shadow - a shadow.
I am tired, and resting,
I invite you to the sideshow,
Where puppets look so much like people.
Harlequins and pirates,
Circus performers and acrobats,
And a villain whose appearance inspires fear,
A wolf and a hare, tigers in a cage -
They are all marionettes
In skillful and hardworking hands.
Puppets are pulled by strings,
There are smiles on their faces,
And a clown plays the trumpet.
And during the performance,
The impression is created,
That the puppets dance on their own.
Ah, how upsetting it is sometimes,
That the master is not seen:
The string goes up and into the darkness.
And the puppets are so obedient to him,
And we naively believe
That a puppet can speak.
But then the master extinguishes the candles -
The ball is over and the evening is over,
The moon will shine in the clouds...
And the puppets will be taken off the long string
And, covered with mothballs,
Will be folded like rags in chests.
