Известно стало, что вблизи от города, в лесах
Бунтовщики, мятежники
Имеют наглость жечь костры, валяться на траве
И замышлять недоброе
Отряду нашему приказ: проследовать туда
Отряд кивнул - и следует
Найти злодеев, окружить врасплох и повязать
Манёвры всё привычные
И через несколько часов отряд уже кольцом
Смутьянов жмёт в их логове
И к горлу каждого копьё приставлено - и мы
Считаем до пятнадцати
Не долго думая, они смекают, что к чему
И что за чем последует
На счёте "три" сдаются все, оружье побросав
Сдаются все как милые
Кто плачет, кто кричит, что рад правительству служить
Хоть палачом, хоть пытчиком
Кто выкуп выплатить сулит, кто - выдать вожаков
Ну, ни стыда, ни гордости
И лишь один сдаётся так, что всем бы перенять
Сдаётся так, как следует
Лежит, мерзавец, на траве и, глядя в небеса
Свистит мотив бессмысленный
Как будто просто мимо шёл, решил передохнуть
Прилёг и стал насвистывать
Как будто вовсе ни при чём (что, кстати, может быть:
Никто ж не вник, не выяснил)
Не долго думая, отряд смекает, что живым
Такого брать не следует
И вот копьё моё пронзает горло свистуна
Всех прочих - в плен, и кончено
В пути обратном я свистать пытаюсь тот мотив
Да не идёт, не вяжется
Оно понятно, сроду я ни слуха не имел
Ни музыкальной памяти
(Как раз того, что следует.)

Ballad

It became known that near the city, in the forests
Rebels, insurgents
Have the audacity to light bonfires, lie on the grass
And plot mischief
Our detachment has an order: to proceed there
The detachment nodded - and follows
To find the villains, surround them by surprise and seize them
The maneuvers are all familiar
And after a few hours the detachment is already in a ring
It squeezes the rioters in their lair
And to the throat of each a spear is put - and we
Count to fifteen
Without thinking twice, they figure out what's what
And what will follow
At "three" they all surrender, throwing away their weapons
They all surrender like darlings
Some cry, others shout they're glad to serve the government
Even as an executioner or torturer
Some promise to pay a ransom, others - to betray the leaders
Well, neither shame nor pride
And only one surrenders in such a way that everyone would adopt
Surrenders as it should be
Lies, the bastard, on the grass and, looking at the sky
Whistles a meaningless tune
As if he was just walking by, decided to take a break
Laid down and started whistling
As if he had nothing to do with it (which, by the way, is possible:
After all, no one delved into it, did not find out)
Without thinking twice, the detachment realizes that alive
Such should not be taken
And so my spear pierces the whistler's throat
All the others - into captivity, and over
On the way back I try to whistle that tune
But it doesn't go, it doesn't fit
It's understandable, I've never had an ear
Nor musical memory
(Which is just what we need.)
