Вместо того, чтоб гнить в глуши
Дыры латать, считать гроши
Можно, пожалуй, шутки ради
Что-нибудь сделать от души

Во изумленье стад земных
Пастырей их и всех иных
Скажем, начать с высот астральных
Благо рукой подать до них

Сев на каком-нибудь плато
Небо измерить от и до
И заключить, что звездочеты
Врали веками черт-те что

Или в пробирке, как в саду
Вырастить новую еду
И применять взамен обычной
Или с обычной наряду

Также не вредно, ясным днем
Междоусобный слыша гром
В планы враждующих проникнуть
Телепатическим путем

А уж разведав что к чему
Кровопролитную чуму
Предотвратить - и с гордым видом
За шпионаж пойти в тюрьму

Или уж впрямь, назло властям
По городам и областям
Тронуться маршем, раздавая
Каждому по потребностям:

Вот тебе, бабка, Юрьев день
Вот тебе, шапка, твой бекрень
Вот тебе, друг степей и джунглей
Твой бюллетень, пельмень, женьшень.

Горе лишь в том, что друг степей
Счастье свое сочтет скорей
Чудом каких-то сил надмирных,
Нежели доблести моей

И наоборот чуть где какой
Неурожай, разбой, застой
Всякий решит, что будь он проклят
Если не я тому виной

Вот, например, не так давно
Шторм небывалый, как в кино
Снес, понимаешь, Нидерланды
Прямо вот напрочь смыл на дно

И, натурально, все вокруг
Сразу, едва прошел испуг
Хором сочли каприз Нептуна
Делом моих несчастных рук

Я же про этот шторм и шквал
Ведать не ведал, знать не знал
Я в это время по Фонтанке
В белой рубашечке гулял

В левой руке моей была
Провинциалка из села
В правой руке моей фиалка
Благоухала и цвела

Instead of rotting in the wilderness
Patching up holes, counting pennies
