И вот я вышел из дома, освоив науку смотреть.
Я посмотрел на мой город, и город был тусклым, как смерть.
Все изменилось, пока я учился читать Имена,
Чужое небо, чужие дороги, чужая страна...
И я подбросил монету, сказав себе: "Зло и добро".
Монета весело встала три раза подряд на ребро.
И я проверил карманы - нож, спички и карта небес,
И за подкладкой - плацкартный билет на туркестанский экспресс.
Вокзал сначала был полон, а к ночи совсем опустел,
А я забыл разузнать, сколько нынче берут за постель.
И мертвый голос, как пойманный ангел, метался в дверях
И говорил о ненужных мне стрелках, платформах, путях...
И я купил папиросы, и после в буфете вино,
И полупьяный буфетчик спросил меня, глядя в окно:
"Послушай, милый, ты точно ли знаешь, что делаешь здесь?"
А я ответил: "Следящий, я жду туркестанский экспресс -
Последний в этом году
Туркестанский экспресс".
Подали поезд, и я отыскал свой девятый вагон,
И проводник попросил документы - и это был Он...
Он удивился - зеленая форма, на что так смотреть?
А я сказал: "Господин мой, я здесь! Я не боюсь умереть!"
И я ушел, и включился, когда проезжали Уфу,
И мне какой-то мудак все объяснял, что такое кунг-фу,
А с верхней полки сказали: "Надежней хороший обрез".
А я подумал: "Я все-таки сел в туркестанский экспресс -

Туркестанский экспресс!."
И под остывшим титаном стакан громыхал словно цепь,
А за багровым окном начиналась Великая Степь,
И проводник подошел и сказал мне: "Возможно, ты прав.
И если так, то поближе держись - я покидаю состав!"
И я не помню прыжка, помню только удар о песок,
Потом он был впереди, я хромал и мы шли на восток.
Потом он сел на траву возле ржавых заброшенных рельс,
И он сказал: "Будем ждать. Здесь пройдет туркестанский экспресс -
Быть может, первый за век,
За весь этот век!."
Он первым прыгнул на буфер, я повис на каких-то штырях,
И кто-то вышел курить - меня втянули в вагон на руках.
