Мне приснился страшный сон:
Гулкий зал и приговор,
Перезвон цепей могильный
И дорога на костёр,
Ледяная тишь тюрьмы,
Ночь без сна, и липкий страх,
И слова немой молитвы,
Что застыла на губах.

И нетвёрдые шаги
По дороге в никуда,
И в слепом рассветном небе
Запоздалая звезда,
Камни площади большой,
И вокруг людское море,
Страх и ненависть в глазах,
Лишь в немногих – боль и горе.

И внезапно страх исчез,
Словно выросли вдруг крылья,
И безумный громкий смех,
И врагов моих бессилье,
Частый сердца перестук,
И душа рвалась на волю,
И в безумии хмельном
Вдруг исчез страх перед болью.

Пять ступеней шатких вверх,
И в глаза глядится Вечность.
Шепот ветра: Смерти нет!
Есть дорога в бесконечность!.
Пламя рвётся к небесам
Неприступною стеною,
Ветер искры разметал,
Унося меня с собою...

Сон ушёл. Осталась жизнь.
Ледяной ожог металла.
Скрип замка. За мной пришли.
Что же, значит, всё с начала...

I Had a Dreadful Dream...

I had a dreadful dream:
A resounding hall and a sentence,
Grave clanking of chains
And a road to the pyre,
The icy stillness of prison,
A night without sleep, and viscous fear,
And the words of a mute prayer,
Which froze on my lips.

And faltering steps
Along a road to nowhere,
And in the blind dawn sky
A belated star,
Stones of a large square,
And a sea of people all around,
Fear and hatred in their eyes,
Only in a few – pain and sorrow.

And suddenly the fear disappeared,
As if wings had suddenly grown,
And an insane, loud laugh,
And the powerlessness of my enemies,
The frequent pounding of my heart,
And my soul yearned for freedom,
And in drunken madness
Suddenly fear of pain disappeared.

Five shaky steps up,
And Eternity looks into the eyes.
Whisper of the wind: There is no Death!
There is a road to infinity!.
The flame rushes to the heavens
With an unassailable wall,
The wind scattered the sparks,
Taking me away with it...

The dream is gone. Life remains.
An icy burn of metal.
The creak of a lock. They've come for me.
Well, so it all begins again...
