אם בלשונות אנשים ומלאכים אדבר,
ואין בי אהבה,
הייתי כנחושת הומה או כצלצול תרועה.
וכי תהיה לי נבואה, ואדע כל הסודות וכל הדעת,
וכי תהיה לי כל האמונה עד כי אעתיק הרים,
ואין בי האהבה - הייתי כאין.
ואם אחלק את כל הוני

האהבה מארכת-אף ועושה חסד,
האהבה לא תקנא, האהבה לא תתפאר ולא תתרומם.
לא תעשה דבר תפלה ולא תבקש את אשר לה
ולא תתמרמר ולא תחשוב הרעה.
לא תשמח בעוולה כי שמחתה עם האמת.
את כל תשא את כל תאמין את כל תקווה ואת כל תסבול
האהבה לא תיפול לעולם אך הנבואות הנה תתבטלנה
והלשונות תכלינה והדעת תתבטל.
כי קצת הוא שידענו וקצת הוא שניבאנו:
וכבוא התמים אז עבור תעבור הקצת.
כאשר הייתי עולל כעולל דיברתי כעולל הגיתי כעולל חשבתי,
וכאשר הייתי לאיש הסרתי דברי העולל:
כי כעת מביטים אנחנו במראה ובחידות, ואז פנים אל פנים.
כעת יודע אני קצתו, ואז כאשר נודעתי אדע אף אני,
ועתה שלוש אלה תעמודנה
האמונה התקווה והאהבה,
והגדולה בהן היא האהבה.
