הוא ידע שאין בחוף שום מיגדלור,
אך תמיד, כשחזר עם ליל,
מן החוף היה מבחין, בתוך השחור,
אור פלאי קורץ לו וצוהל.

הוא ידע שאין בחוף שום מגדלור,
אך תמיד האיר לו אור מתוך השחור.

היא חיכתה לו בשפתיים מלוחות,
הוא חבק אותה אליו דומם,
הוא הבטיח: "אשאר עימך, אחות!"
אך עם שחר שוב חמק לים.

הוא ידע...

פעם היא לפתה אותו חזק חזק:
"השאר, כי לא אוכל יותר!"
הוא נשק לשתי עיניה, ושתק;
אך עם שחר שוב נראה חותר.

אך עם לילה, בשובו מים ושחור,
לא האיר לו עוד האור כמגדלור.

הם מצאו אותה בחוף, בין הצדפים,
וליבה כגוש פחם שחור.
ורק אז בלאט גילו לו השחפים,
כי ליבה היה לו מגדלור.

הוא ידע...

הוא חפן אז את הלב אשר אוכל,
פתע שוב זרח הלב וחם.
וכיום במרום הצוק, בראש מגדל,
הוא מאיר לכל מלח בים.

כי למרות שאין בחוף שום מגדלור,
לב אחד תמיד מאיר לו מן השחור.

Lighthouse

I knew that there was no lighthouse on the shore,
But always, when I returned with the night,
From the shore, I would discern, amidst the black,
A wondrous light flickering and cheering me on.

I knew that there was no lighthouse on the shore,
But always a light shone for me out of the darkness.

She waited for me with salty lips,
I embraced her silently,
I promised: "I will stay with you, sister!"
But at dawn, I would always slip away to sea.

I knew...

Once she held me very tightly:
"Stay, because I can't take it anymore!"
I kissed her two eyes and was silent;
But at dawn, I was seen rowing again.

But with night, on my return from the sea and the black,
The light no longer shone for me as a lighthouse.

They found her on the shore, among the seashells,
And her heart was like a lump of black coal.
And only then did the seagulls tell me softly,
That her heart had been my lighthouse.

I knew...

I then clasped the heart that was devoured,
Suddenly the heart glowed and became warm.
And now at the summit of the cliff, at the top of the tower,
I shine for every sailor at sea.

Because even though there is no lighthouse on the shore,
One heart always shines for me out of the black.
