אחת ולתמיד?
ואז " פתאום - אתה מבין אותם:
את האיכר שעל הצ'ימבוראסו,
ואת האם שעל הפוג′יסאן,
ואת הילד על הוזוב.
גם הם יודעים, ודאי שבעולם

ומקווים ליום, שכבר יבוא,
שבו ההר ישקוט מזעפו.
ואז על הבזלת השחורה
איך אז יוריק הדשא ויפרח
אחת ולתמיד!

At the Foot of a Volcano

When you read in the papers
about a volcanic eruption in Sicily,
about the burial of two whole villages
in Nicaragua, Chile, or India;
when you read in the papers
you ask yourself why?
Why do the farmers return
precisely to the slopes that betrayed them?
Why don′t they just flee from there,
and look for a safer place,
where they can finally live in peace
once and for all?
After all, every few years
- as it says in the newspapers -
the lava will erupt from the mountain again
and threaten to bury the entire village.
Why are they so insistent on returning?
Why don′t they abandon their village
once and for all?
Sometimes, you meet a tourist,
and he asks: Tell me, why -
why do you insist on living
right at the foot of a volcano?
Surely you can find other places in the world,
quiet corners, without smoke and noise,
and solid, good soil
that won′t tremble beneath your feet.
Why don′t you move away from here,
and look for a safer place,
where you can finally live in peace
once and for all?
After all, every few years
- as it says in the newspapers -
the lava erupts from the mountain again
and threatens the entire village once more.
Why are you so insistent,
why don′t you abandon your village
once and for all?
And then - suddenly - you understand them:
the farmer on Chimborazo,
and the mother on Fuji,
and the child on Vesuvius.
They know, of course, that there are
quieter corners in the world than a volcano,
and soil more solid than this,
in which the homes of their ancestors are buried.
They could perhaps move away from here,
and look for a safer place,
where they can finally live in peace
once and for all.
But they cling to the slopes of the mountain,
and wait for tomorrow, perhaps?
And they hope for the day, which will surely come,
when the mountain will calm its wrath.
And then the grass will grow green
and the flowers will bloom on the black basalt,
once and for all!
