The Grey Horizon

Michal is not so little any more, but she still loves stories
And she also loves to wander to the grey horizons
Harvest is over and the day is fading, the skies are painted red
And in the silent field stands a lonely orphaned tree

Michal looked at it sadly and whispered in an anxious voice
It must be so frightening to be a tree when night falls here
So I told her a little story and she listened, lost in thought
Didn't I tell you? Michal loves stories

I told her about soldiers who went to war
And about one who fell close, very close to the ground
I told her about my friend, the dearest of all my friends
Who remained on the battlefield and will never return to me

Then Michal bent down to me and asked in a hushed voice
Isn't it truly terrible when there is war in the country?

And as darkness enveloped us, we returned slowly from the fields
And only one orphaned tree remained alone in the darkness, on its own
Tomorrow perhaps it will already be autumn, the crickets whisper
But again we shall go out to wander to the grey horizons
