لا تطلبي مني حساب حياتي
ان الحديث يطول يا مولاتي!
كل العصور انا بها ... فكأنما
عمري ملايين من السنوات ...
تعبت من السفر الطويل حقائبي
وتعبت من خيلي ومن غزواتي ...
لم يبق نهد ... اسود او ابيض
الا زرعت بارضه راياتي ...
لم تبق زاوية بجسم جميله
الا ومرت فوقها عرباتي...
فصلت من جلد النساء عباءة
وبنيت اهراما من الحلمات ...
وكتبت شعرا . لا يشايه سحره
الا كلام الله في التوراة...
...واليوم اجلس فوق سطح سفينتي
كاللص . ابحث عن طريق نجاه
وادير مفتاح الحريم ... فلا ارى
في الظل غير جماجم الاموات
اين السبايا ؟. اين ما ملكت يدي؟
اين البخور يضوع من حجراتي؟
اليوم تنتقم النهود لنفسها .
وترد لي الطعنات بالطعنات .
ماساة هارون الرشيد مريرة
لو تدركين مرارة الماساة
اني كمصباح الطريق . صديقي
ابكي . ولا احد يرى دمعاتي .
الجنس كان مسكنا جربته
لم ينه احزاني ولاازماتي
والحب . اصبح كله متشابها
كتشابه الاوراق في الغابات .
انا عاجز عن عشق ايه نملة
او غيمة . عن عشق اي حصاة
مارست الف عباده وعباده
فوجدت افضلها عبادة ذاتي
فمك المطيب . لا يحل قضيتي
فقضيتي في دفتري وداواتي .
كل الدروب امامنا مسدودة
وخلاصنا . في الرسم بالكلمات

Drawing with Words

Do not ask me to relate my life story,
For the conversation would grow long, my lady!
All through all ages I have lived; just as if
My life were millions of years long...
I am weary of the long journey; my saddle bags
Are weary of my steed, and of my conquests...
There remains no breast—black or white-
Whereon I have not planted my standards...
There remains no corner of her lovely body
Over which my chariots have not passed...
From the hides of women I have tailored a cloak
And have built pyramids of nipples...
And I have written a poem whose enchantment is equaled
Only by the word of God in the Torah...
...Today I sit on the deck of my ship
Like a thief; searching for a means of escape
And I turn the key of the harem—but see
In the shadows naught but the skulls of the dead.
Where are the concubines? Where are those I possessed?
Where is the incense that used to billow from my chambers?
Today the breasts themselves will take their revenge,
And repay me thrust for thrust.
The tragedy of Harun al-Rashid is bitter
If you could understand the bitterness of that tragedy
I am like the lamp-post on the road, my friend,
I weep, but no one sees my tears.
I tried sex as a remedy,
But it did not end my sorrows or my crises
And love has become all the same,
Like the sameness of leaves in a forest.
I am incapable of loving an ant,
Or a cloud, or a pebble
I practiced a thousand religions and worships,
But I found the worship of myself to be the best of them.
For your sweet mouth does not resolve my case,
For my case resides in my notebook and my pen.
All the roads ahead of us are closed,
And our escape lies in the drawing with words.
