御国(みくに)のためと知る

春まだ夜は長く
鐘鳴る了仙寺
運命(さだめ)と泣くも良し
儚(はかな)き世の情け

下田港(みなと)を訪れた黒船(ふね)が
沖遙か彼方に揺れ
駕篭(かご)で行くのは 時代(とき)に翻弄(あそ)ばれた
眉目清(みめさや)か 麗しい女性(ひと)

桜見頃の唐人坂で
巡る想いは ひとりひとり
泣けば花散る一輪挿しの
艶(あで)な姿は春の宵

月冴え照る道に
椿の濡れまつ毛
世を捨て 世に追われ
旅立つ稲生沢(いのうざわ)

明けの鳥(からす)と謡(うた)われしことは
今遙か昔の夢
死ぬは易(やす)くて 生きるは難(かた)しと
三味の音(ね)に託せし女性(ひと)

石や礫(つぶて)でラシャメン結いに
後ろ指さす ひとりひとり
恋の涙と雨降る中を
己(おの)が愛した男性(ひと)は去く

桜見頃の唐人坂で

A Chinese Tale (The Ballad of Rashamen)

In this nameless town,
a foreign sun rises.
A maiden knows her sorrow
is for her country's sake.

Spring nights are still long,
bells toll at Ryosenji Temple.
Weep for your fate, my love, or
for the fleeting kindness of this world.

The black ships that visited Shimoda Harbor
sway far off in the distance.
Traveling by palanquin, tossed by the times,
a beautiful woman, fair of face.

On Tojinzaka, where the cherry blossoms are in full bloom,
each person's thoughts wander.
Tears fall, petals scatter from the single stem,
her charming figure in the spring evening.

On the moonlit path,
camellia's wet eyelashes.
Renouncing the world, yet pursued by it,
departing from Inouzawa.

What was sung of the dawn crow
is now a distant dream.
'Tis easier to die than to live, she said,
entrusting her feelings to the shamisen's sound.

Tying her Rashamen with stones and pebbles,
each person points their fingers behind her back.
Through tears of love and falling rain,
the man she loved departs.

On Tojinzaka, where the cherry blossoms are in full bloom,
