我醒来听到阿祖哼著乡音

今夜月儿圆圆想起帮阿祖提的笔
她在月圆的时候总想起她的乡亲
她把一辈子的积蓄寄给他们盖房子娶亲
却把自己月圆月缺寄给此地

今夜月儿圆圆我在楼梯口写着歌曲
一对情侣分著汉堡包谈心
我想起我的阿祖她不懂汉堡包和爱情
却对我说大福饼真甜

Ah Zu's Mooncake

Thinking of Ah Zu's mooncakes on this full moon night
The mooncakes she loved to eat until she was old
She said when she first came to Singapore on that cold night
She only had a mooncake with her.

Thinking of Ah Zu's wedding song on this full moon night
She gave herself in marriage with that song
I remember when I was nine on a full moon night
I woke up to hear Ah Zu humming a tune in our mother tongue

Thinking of writing for Ah Zu on this full moon night
She would always think of her folks back home when the moon was full
She sent all her life savings to them to build houses and marry off their children
But she spent her years here, under the rising and setting moon.

On this full moon night I am writing songs on the landing
A couple sharing a hamburger and chatting
I think of my Ah Zu, who didn't understand hamburgers and love
But who told me mooncakes are sweet.
