Fujieda Drizzle

A woman with a child asked me for directions,
Asking about my hometown.

I had no intention of returning,
But I told her, "Follow me part of the way."
I said, looking up at the Fujieda maple leaves.

The child grew attached and wouldn't leave my side,
Even when I tried to scare him away, saying, "I'm a demon! A demon!"

He just laughed and wasn't frightened at all.
Interrupting his scolding mother,
I said, "The boy resembles my son who passed away."

The mountain peaches are reddening, the sound of the waterfall echoes,
It's been five years since I've been back to my hometown.

For some reason, tears started falling,
Hiding them with my sleeve, I said, "Take care."
Turning back, I walked into the Fujieda drizzle.
