Barefoot by the railway, chasing the evening glow,
Glass marbles, tin boxes, hero cards in tow.
Playing rubber band jump rope, hiding under the stone bridge,
Grandma mending shoes in the courtyard, a familiar image.
Iron gate, basketball hoop, and ginkgo flowers in sight,
Does anyone live in that thatched-roof house, bathed in sunlight?
School's out, we laugh and play along the way,
Water gurgling through the rice paddies, day by day.
We grew up, one day at a time,
White Rabbit candy sticking to our teeth, a sweet sublime.
Dreaming of becoming fairies and scientists so grand,
Mud stains and scribbles on the white wall, drawn by hand.
We grew up, one day at a time,
Seasons passed, the old parasol tree began to climb.
In the sandpile, treasures and towers we'd find,
A long bench, our makeshift home, a place of its kind.
Days were slow, like time stood still,
Leaves fell on the pond, we moved to a house on the hill.
A 20-inch color TV, a leather sofa so plush,
Cartoons at 5:30, Big Pinwheel, never a rush.
After dinner, cooling off under the starry night,
Fireflies, a gentle breeze, and a crescent moon so bright.
Adults talked of things we couldn't understand,
Monsters hid under the bed, throughout the land.
We grew up, one day at a time,
Memories of rain that wouldn't end, a constant chime.
Cicadas chirping, summer vacation coming to a close,
A new school year, time for a haircut, everyone knows.
We grew up, one day at a time,
Longing for change and dreams sublime.
Once thought we were invincible, in our prime,
Wrote poems but dared not give them to you, one rhyme at a time.
