金剛石もみか(が)かすは(ずば)
珠のひかりはそはざ(わざ)らむ(ん)
人もまなひ(び)
てのちにこそ
まことの徳はあらは(わ)るれ
時計のはりのたえまなく
めく(ぐ)るかこ(がご)とく時のまの
日かけを(げお)しみてはけ(げ)みなは(ば)
いかなるわさ(ざ)かならさ(ざ)らむ(ん)
水は器
水はうつは(わ)にしたかひ(がい)て
そのさまさ(ざ)まになりぬなり
人はましは(じわ)る友により
よきにあしきにうつるなり
おのれにまさるよき友を
えらひ(び)もとめてもろともに
こころの駒にむちうちて
まなひ(び)の道にすすめかし

Diamond

Even a diamond must be cut (and polished)
A pearl's luster cannot be enhanced (by external means)
People also learn (and grow)
Only over time
Can true virtue be revealed
Like the hands of a clock that move without pause
So too do the moments of our lives pass by
If we cherish each passing day
What task can we not accomplish?
Water is a vessel
Water adapts to the shape of its container
And assumes its various forms
People, too, are influenced by their companions
For better or for worse
