Mother's Song

Mother worked late into the night,
Knitting gloves for me with all her might.
The cold wind blows, she'd say with a fright,

News from my hometown, a welcome sight,
The scent of the hearth, warm and bright.

Mother spins hemp thread, all day long,
Working tirelessly, her spirit strong.
Father threshes straw on the earthen floor, all along,
"You work hard too, son," is his encouraging song.
Winter in my hometown feels so long,
I wish I could send them a radio, play them a song.

Mother's hands are chapped and sore,
She rubs them with miso, a natural lore.
The snow will melt, and spring's at the door,
The fields are waiting, that's for sure.
The stream's murmur I can almost hear, adore,
Nostalgia washes over me, evermore.
