The Cross

Long ago, my mother would say,
Be nice to people, they'll treat you the same.
I followed her advice all my life,
But with each passing year,
I've grown more jaded.

I reach out a helping hand, but it's rejected.
I open my heart, but I'm met with scorn.
They say I'm too clingy.
Or they're so cold, I get frostbite.
They're afraid of my love.

It's like I'm carrying a cross, sacrificing myself for a cause that's not my own.
The more I give, the worse it gets.
I'm told that to prevent further heartbreak,
I should build higher walls
To cut myself off from the world.
But the walls become a prison,
Trapping me inside.
