Losing Myself

As a child trailing behind my grandmother,
I learned manners and to not talk too much.
In school, I studied hard
All for exceptional results.
After graduating, I was a newbie
Landing a good job at a big company was not bad.
I dated and played with tarot cards,
Until my love blossomed and bore fruit.
Life seemed so beautiful, my path secure,
But have I ever wondered where I went wrong?
Could I have tried the forbidden fruit?
Trusting my instincts
Not wanting to live my life on rails,
Even with strange looks,
Mocking and ridiculing me,
I couldn't get the world to help me,
I just wanted to bloom with courage
To dance with my fantasies
To take a detour, never fearing trouble
I could always sing to the rhythm of my own tune.

Now, I quietly watch my grandchildren play tug-of-war,
My strength waning, old memories a little hazy.
Letting each day pass by,
As if I had too much time.
Some things in the past I missed out on,
But I can't go back and start over.
Could I have tried the forbidden fruit?
