Dan Stevens - The American Dream Lyrics

Lyrics The American Dream - Dan Stevens

We were sittin' underneath the railroad tracks
Drinking Boon's farm wine n' kickin' back
Thinkin' bout how our lives were gonna be
Then we road our bikes to the Icehouse farm
Janey came down with her summer dress on
Tried to kiss her but you know she turned away
And i never did get another chance
Cos' a football player got in her pants
N they had to get married
Right before the senior prom
Now 5 kids later with a couple of guys
She looks at me with those sad dark eyes
Thinks about the way things could have been
Those years are gone and that sun has set
And this right here is as good as it gets
No use crying over what wasnt meant to be
The American dream
Wasn't what it seemed
But I guess its good to always have a dream
So I went off to get a degree
Ted walked into the factory
Just like his father he stepped up to the plate
Well he raised two kids
And he put em' through school
Even though he knew they though him a fool
N' he kept on pushing
N ya know they turned ut great
That swing shift life really took its toll
His hair turned grey now hes gettin' old
N' just when it look like he might catch a break
After 37 years the plant closed down
Packed up all the gear and
N' they moved outta town
N' everybody's future just seemed to fade away
The American dream
Wasn't what it seemed
But I guess its good to always have a dream
I keep on thinkin'
That someday now its gonna change
There's a better life a waitin' down the line
But when I stop to see
How far we've really come
Then in my heart
I know that its okay
Now we're sittin' underneath
The railroad tracks
Gotta quart' o' jack daniels n' we're kickin back
Thinking bout how our lifetime shoulda been
Now i ain't the type to sit and complain
But you take a look around
And ya see its a shame
Nothin ever seems to turn out like its planned
See I sold my soul to the rock and roll
Fell outta school n' I hit the road
Never did get a chance to settle down
Till a met a woman who was just like me
The rest as they say is history
Now we're livin' out our lives as best we can
The American dream
Wasn't what it seemed
But I guess its good to always have a dream
Yeah I guess its good to always have a dream
