Doin' It Right (Commentary)

We are talking to Carly Pearce
And listening to her entire new album "Every Little Thing"
We just played "I Need A Ride Home"
It's a song that you didn't write
But when you felt it, it immediately just touched your heart
And, uh, made you feel like somebody had written it about you
And I was just thinking, as a songwriter
That's gotta be a pretty powerful thing
For you to be on the other side
Where people would swear that you peered into their soul and life
And wrote their story, and to get that feedback from fans

Oh, yeah
Songwriting is such an art to me
And I feel like when you're
When you're at a level that all of us are at, where we get to do this as a profession
And you have those moments where somebody's walking up to you
And saying, "Oh my gosh, you wrote that song about me"
Which I've experienced just in, in touring over the last year

It's kind of a pinch me moment
And I never really knew what that felt like until I started to tour
And get my music out there
But it's such a kind "Oh, okay you're doing something right'
And again, that's why I think
Making sure that I was so vulnerable in my songwriting on this album
That's when it really hits people and that's when they really connect
And, and you feel like a winner, and baring your soul is a win for everyone

Yeah, because all those little, uh
Specific details and nuances that you maybe think are insignificant
That's exactly what maybe somebody else relates to (right)
And had been there
Well, it's interesting, this next song
I saw the title, I was like, "Yeah, Doin' It Right, this sounds like a good one"
But it's so deceptive because really, what you're singing about
Is he's doing all the wrong things right
So talk to me about this song

I'm really really close with a girl in Nashville who, she wrote this song with me
And she wrote "Dare Ya" with me, which we'll get to
Her name's Allison Veltz
And she and I, we have spent so many hours on the phone
Talking about guys that suck
And we are, if anybody's written with us in Nashville
They will tell you we're kind of a force when we come in the room
Just 'cause we're really close as friends (yeah)
And we kind of dominate a little bit (yeah)

And we wrote it with this guy named Oscar
And he's such a great track guy
And such a good, just melody and lyric guy
And he had this title "Doin' it Right"
And Allison and I immediately, we were like
Alright, well let's flip it and be about just this strength song
'Cause again, I wanna be empowering
The way that Shania was in her heartbreak and those kind of songs

I don't want a girl to ever say, "Oh"
You know, just crying in desperation, kind of a thing
And even, I feel like "Every Little Thing"
It's saying the good things about the relationship too

So when we wrote this song, he started that crazy weird beat
And she and I just went to town
And I just think girls can relate, like (oh, yeah)
You know, you, you are doing everything right
If you want me to run away from you

Yeah, and what is it about games?
I don't understand the rules and the games
And it's exhausting
I hate dating

Girl, amen
We are on the same wavelength
You know I am curious about one thing about this song
There is a, we'll call it an adult word in the song (yep)
And sometimes I think no other word will do
And I'm wondering, was there ever any debate or hesitation in the writing room
About whether or not to use that specific word?

Yeah, there was actually
Allison comes from kind of an urban writing
She just has a more eclectic, hip-hop kind of writing and just influence
And she said it
I said cheap little (yeah), and she decided to do this
And we kind of went back and forth
And I was like, "I can't sing that"
And she's like "Yes, you can"

And I started thinking about it
And I was like, you know what, there's just a
There's a swagger and an honesty in a way that you know
Might shock people a little bit coming from me and
But this is a funny thing, but I always scan the audience at shows
And if there's a lot of children in the front (oh, yeah)
My band makes fun of me
'Cause we're like "What version are we gonna get tonight?"
'Cause I'll either sing "cheap little" or whatever (right, right)

But I just felt like
I'm mad in this song and kinda
But also kinda like "Bye" (yeah), and it just fit
