Ogni epoca ha la sua malattia.
Mio zio ricorda sempre la "spagnola": travolgente, drammatica, violenta... adattissima agli umori umani dell′epoca. Si potrebbe studiare la storia dal linguaggio delle malattie.
E poi la tisi, il mal sottile che colpiva deliziosamente un'umanità illanguidita, romantica e attaccata alle tende.
Si muore come si deve... l′epoca lo esige.
L'importante, è opporsi alle malattie. L'importante è non invecchiare. Essere vecchi vuol dire non trovare più una parte eccitante e fisica da interpretare... e cadere in quello stupido riposo in cui si aspetta la morte.
Non lo abbiamo mica rubato il gusto di vivere. Ci spetta di diritto. Ma forse non basta più difenderlo con la pentola che bolle, con la libertà, col potere all′immaginazione.
Sento come il bisogno di un rigore... ma, a scanso d′equivoci... da inventare ogni giorno. Non un poliziotto... ma un guardiano di me stesso. La libertà di non essere liberi.
E ora, ai miei amici che gli racconto? Sì, ai miei amici... ai Re Nudi, ai Gesù Liberi, agli Erbi Voglio, ai Libertà 1, 2, 3, 4... che gli racconto? Io che sono sempre stato d'accordo che si può far tutto?

Every age has its own disease.
My uncle always remembers the "Spanish flu": overwhelming, dramatic, violent... perfectly suited to the human moods of the time. One could study history from the language of diseases.
And then consumption, the delicate disease that delightfully afflicted a languid humanity, romantic and attached to curtains.
One dies as one should... the age demands it.
The important thing is to oppose diseases. The important thing is not to get old. To be old means to no longer find an exciting and physical part to play... and to fall into that stupid rest in which one awaits death.
We didn't steal the pleasure of living. It is rightfully ours. But perhaps it is no longer enough to defend it with the boiling pot, with freedom, with power to the imagination.
I feel like I need some rigor... but, to avoid misunderstandings... to be invented every day. Not a policeman... but a guardian of myself. The freedom not to be free.
And now, what do I tell my friends? Yes, to my friends... to the Naked Kings, to the Free Jesuses, to the Wanting Herbs, to Freedoms 1, 2, 3, 4... what do I tell them? I who have always agreed that anything is possible?
