You were all soldiers, following orders
And did what they told you to do.
Out of the ashes you took your commando
Who swore they would fight to the last;
Across the frontier of the wide Orange River
All; with vengeful task.
To muster the passion of your blood brothers
To take up arms for the cause.
To burn down homes of supporters of Britain
Whose soldiers did that to yours.

Were they rebels or traitors or just demonstrators
Or patriots loyal and true?
Those that joined you were wanted for treason
And the grim punishment that they would face
Was the hangman's noose of the firing squad;
A very high price that they paid.

With innocent blood on its furls.
