Songtexte

Somebody gave me Chagall's violin
Now it hangs upon my wall, begging me: come in
I never play it, I wouldn't dare
'Cause I'm scared that it would whisk me off somewhere
Into a world where every song of love is true
There is no darkness lurking in the smile of your companion
Secrets are not kept away from view
And when you speak, your words are roaring rivers
Cutting canyons
And you are never haunted
By each misstep, every sin
Always in tune, like Chagall's violin
They say when he painted, Chagall was aflame
The canvas slowly burning in his name
All the injustice, the horrors of war
All the sorrow and the beauty that he saw
Colors a child would like to swim in, like the sea
The bluest of blue, the sky a velvet smoke
A veil of magic
Romance that would let a heart run free
A laughable longing unfulfilled
A story slightly tragic
And high above the rooftops
The moon is watching everything
Making sweet music on Chagall's violin
No one knows the lyrics
There really is no score
But the stars will keep on singing
Until they fall and can sing no more
Lovers are floating, Paris vanishing below
Soft summer rain is cooling down an empty midnight sidewalk
Everyone's an artist, this I know
But sometimes the fear will have the pen and paper in a deadlock
And what could be a masterpiece is thrown into the bin
All to the sound from Chagall's violin
Somebody gave me Chagall's violin
Now I pick it up, and softly I begin
