Billy was a friend of mine, we drove the midnight run
And on the plains outside of Hay we'd race our rigs for fun
Just before the border line a girl's voice filled the air
Calling on the CB, Billy knew girls everywhere
This one he called Sally, she ran a pub somewhere
She knew the codes and all the roads that led away from there
When the scaleys stopped to drink she'd find out where they'd been
And radio their whereabouts to Billy and our team

Calling out to Billy when to move and when to wait
He wouldn't tell us where she was, 'cause that would blow the game
Where Sally's on the air he called the pub without a name
Billy lost some points for driving hours in excess
The RTA was after him, he was hounded more or less
Still he kept on driving late, I guess that's all he knew
I saw him roar up laughing saying "Sal will guide me through"
That night he struck a thunderstorm, his radio went out
He took the long way 'round in case the scaleys were about
The night was dark and raining, it was such a rotten bend
Where Billy missed the turnoff and jackknifed to his end

Calling out to Billy trying to find out why he's late
He wouldn't tell us where she was 'cause that would blow the game
But I pictured Sally waiting at the pub without a name
I gave a bloke a ride that night, I couldn't see his face

He asked me if I knew the pub in the town just further on
But when I turned to answer him my passenger was gone
I stopped the truck, I searched the road, hoped he didn't fall
But everything was still like there'd been no one there at all
I headed for the town he said and found that one hotel
And there behind the bar was the girl they all called Sal
