I was only eight years old
Readin' comics from the rack at Denny's drug store
And I wanted me some gum
Had a quarter in my pocket, needed one more
Don't know what got into me
When I tucked a pack of Wrigley's in the pocket of my jeans
Felt a tap on my shoulder and an old man said to me
"Boy, you're headed down a road
Where you just don't wanna go
If you start slippin' down that slope
You won't get out alive
If you give a ride to the devil
Someday, he's gonna wanna drive"
Got the keys to Daddy's Ford
He said, "Don't you let me find a scratch tomorrow"
My second cousin brought a six-pack
Though I knew it wasn't right, I didn't say no
Came home after midnight
Snuck up to my room and I just got into my bed
An empty bottle in his hand
Daddy woke me up and said
"Boy, you're headed down a road
Where you just don't wanna go
If you start slippin' down that slope
You won't get out alive
If you give a ride to the devil
Someday, he's gonna wanna drive"
When life's full of frustration, trials and temptation
These are the words that have been my salvation
"Boy, you're headed down a road
Where you just don't wanna go
If you start slippin' down that slope
You won't get out alive
If you give a ride to the devil
Someday, he's gonna wanna drive"
Someday, he's gonna wanna drive
(Wanna drive)
Someday, he's gonna wanna drive
(Wanna drive)
