Fight All the Time

I fought from the time I was 15, and I think I had my last fight,
It was either I was 21 or 22
The last three fights were kickboxing fights,
And I had those while I was doing standup comedy
I was spreading myself too thin
I was working a bunch of different jobs,
I was working delivering newspapers,
I was working as a private investigator's assistant,
I did some construction,
I did a bunch of different odd jobs to make a living
I had three kickboxing fights, and I was entertaining
The idea of fighting professionally
But I was also starting to get really worried about brain damage
I did a lot of boxing, sparring and a lot
Of what you would call gym wars
Where guys would just, we would beat the shit out of each other
And you'd get hurt and come homе with headaches
You would basically be fighting in thе gym
The gyms that I came up in were real hard nose,
Really you know, tough gyms
If you weren't tough
You did not survive, and they weren't interested in
Anybody that couldn't take a shot or anybody
That wasn't willing to go to war
So you would put on a mouthpiece and put on a cup,
You put your shin pads on, and you'd beat the fuck out of each other
And that was a big part of learning how to fight

'Cause we were always nervous
Everytime, when we would go to tournament's,
We were nervous, because, you know
I'd seen many of my friends get knocked unconscious
In these tournaments, get kicked in the head, taken to hospitals
And you know, I'd seen it in the gym too,
A lot of guys getting beat up and knocked down
It was constant
It had happened to me a couple of times. I'd been hurt
So we had this gallows humor
We would go to these events
The tension would be so thick
Everybody taking deep breaths and trying to
Relax and just stay loose before you fight
And I would be the class clown
It was a charged environment
So anything that I said that was actually funny
Would get a giant reaction, and that became addictive

My take on it was, you think I'm funny because you're my friend
But other people are gonna think I'm an asshole
Like the things that I think are funny are fucked up
I have a fucked up sense of humor
I mean, here I am devoting most of my time
Trying to get really good at knocking people unconscious
Trying to separate people and their consciousness
So I was doing my best every day to get good at that
I was trying to hurt people. That's what I was trying to get good at
I was trying to get good at hurting the human body.
I was such a weirdo
No one would think that the things that I was making fun of were funny
But I knew from martial arts that if
I worked really hard at something, I could get good at it
And I had this thought that maybe I could do that
With comedy 'cause I didn't wanna fight anymore
I mean, for a person who's been through what
I've done with my body, my body works remarkably well
But the brain damage thing, I don't know, I really don't know
I really step back and think about
Some of those wars that I was in
In my last fight, I got TKO'd, I got stopped
I got hit with a left hook and dropped, and my legs
Went out from under me, and then I got up and I get hit again,
Fell down again and they stopped the fight
That was when I decided I'm going to stop
I know where this is going. I saw guys at the gym,
Who were punch drunk
Slurring their words, they would forget things,
And I had seen some people progress towards that,
And it was very, very disturbing
And I'd be lying in bed at night after a hard sparring
Session and my head would be pounding
I would think, "What am I doing to my fucking brain?
Like, what am I doing to myself?"
I got real lucky that I found standup comedy

I most certainly would've started fighting
And you know to not be training intelligently,
Because I wasn't training intelligent
I was training like a meathead
And that was just all we knew back then
I probably would have sustained some pretty
Significant damage before I ever even got into the Octagon
I probably would've already had massive
Brain damage before I ever had a fight

Je me dispersais trop.

J'ai fait un tas de petits boulots différents pour gagner ma vie.
J'ai fait trois combats de kickboxing, et j'envisageais
l'idée de me battre professionnellement.
Mais je commençais aussi à vraiment m'inquiéter des dommages cérébraux.
J'ai fait beaucoup de boxe, de sparring et beaucoup
de ce qu'on appelle des guerres de gym,
où les gars, on se frappait comme des animaux.
Et tu te blessais et tu rentrais à la maison avec des maux de tête.
En gros, tu te battais à la salle de sport.
Les salles de sport d'où je viens étaient vraiment hardcore,
tu sais, des salles de sport difficiles.
Si tu n'étais pas coriace,
tu ne survivais pas, et ils ne s'intéressaient pas
à ceux qui ne savaient pas encaisser un coup ou à ceux
qui n'étaient pas prêts à faire la guerre.
Alors tu mettais un protège-dents et une coquille,
tu mettais tes protège-tibias, et vous vous tapiez dessus.
Et c'était une grande partie de l'apprentissage du combat.

Je faisais rire certaines personnes à l'entraînement
parce qu'on était toujours nerveux.
À chaque fois qu'on allait en tournoi,
on était nerveux, parce que, tu sais,
j'avais vu beaucoup de mes amis se faire mettre KO
dans ces tournois, se faire botter la tête, être emmenés à l'hôpital.
Et tu sais, je l'avais vu à la salle aussi,
beaucoup de gars se faire tabasser et mettre au tapis.
C'était constant.
C'était arrivé à moi aussi quelques fois. J'avais été blessé.
Alors on avait cet humour noir.
On allait à ces événements,
la tension était si palpable.
Tout le monde prenait de grandes respirations et essayait de
se détendre et de rester souple avant de se battre.
Et moi, j'étais le clown de service.
C'était un environnement chargé en émotions.
Alors tout ce que je disais qui était vraiment drôle
suscitait une réaction énorme, et c'est devenu addictif.

Je me disais que tu me trouvais drôle parce que tu étais mon amie,
mais que les autres allaient me trouver con.
Genre, les choses que je trouve drôles sont tordues.
J'ai un humour de merde.
Enfin, je consacre la plupart de mon temps
à essayer de devenir vraiment bon pour mettre les gens KO,
à essayer de séparer les gens de leur conscience.
Alors je faisais de mon mieux chaque jour pour devenir bon à ça.
J'essayais de faire mal aux gens. C'est ce que j'essayais de maîtriser.
J'essayais de devenir bon pour faire mal au corps humain.
J'étais tellement bizarre.
Personne ne trouverait drôles les choses dont je me moquais.
Mais je savais grâce aux arts martiaux que si
je travaillais vraiment dur sur quelque chose, je pouvais devenir bon.
Et je me suis dit que je pourrais peut-être faire ça
avec l'humour, parce que je ne voulais plus me battre.
Je veux dire, pour quelqu'un qui a fait subir à son corps ce que
j'ai fait subir au mien, mon corps fonctionne remarquablement bien.
Mais les dommages cérébraux, je ne sais pas, je ne sais vraiment pas.
Je prends vraiment du recul et je repense à
certaines de ces guerres que j'ai menées.
Lors de mon dernier combat, j'ai été mis KO par TKO, j'ai été arrêté.
J'ai reçu un crochet du gauche et je suis tombé, et mes jambes
ont lâché, puis je me suis relevé et j'ai été touché à nouveau,
je suis retombé et ils ont arrêté le combat.
C'est là que j'ai décidé d'arrêter.
Je savais où ça allait mener. J'ai vu des gars à la salle
qui étaient ivres de coups,
qui avaient du mal à parler, qui oubliaient des choses,
et j'avais vu certaines personnes évoluer vers ça,
et c'était très, très inquiétant.
Et je restais allongé dans mon lit la nuit après une séance de sparring difficile,
la tête me tambourinait,
et je me disais : "Qu'est-ce que je fais à mon putain de cerveau ?
Qu'est-ce que je me fais subir ?"
J'ai eu beaucoup de chance de trouver le stand-up.

Je veux dire, si l'UFC avait existé à l'époque,
j'aurais certainement commencé à me battre.
Et tu sais, je ne me serais pas entraîné intelligemment,
parce que je ne m'entraînais pas intelligemment.
Je m'entraînais comme une brute.
Et c'est tout ce qu'on savait faire à l'époque.
J'aurais probablement subi des dommages assez
importants avant même d'entrer dans l'Octogone.
J'aurais probablement déjà eu des dommages cérébraux massifs
avant même d'avoir fait un seul combat.
