Manhã de Rodeio

Com a palha e em cima os gravetos
O fogo amanheceu armado
E, num upa, com os tocos secos
O galpão ficou iluminado.

Nesta manhã querendona
Os galos chamaram os peões
Pra conversar com a cambona
Bem recostada aos tições.

Depressa formou-se a roda
Dos tomadores de mate
E os pitos de fumo-em-corda
Com a cuia o tempo reparte.

Do sangrador já se escuta
O moqueio das chamas tontas,
Frigindo os nervos da nuca
E as duas ripas das pontas.

Com a erva usada e a água morna
E o assado que não tem mais...
Os cavalos, todos na forma,
Dão a orelha pra os seus buçais.

Um peão destorce as rodilhas
De um laço que não tem dono,
E um outro desapresilha
O cabresto do cinamomo.

O capataz pegou o grito:
"-Minha gente, bamo s'imbora!"
Ficando ali um peão solito
Maneando os tentos da espora.

Se foram... esporas cantando
O canto das suas rosetas
E a cuscada ía pulando
No freio de um sotreta.

Ficou só, pulseando as vacas
O peão caseiro da estância
E o sereno molhando as patas
Da alvorada que vem mansa.

Na porteira da invernada
Se esparrama toda a escolta.
Mate amargo, carne assada,
Café bem doce na volta!

"Êêêra vaca!... ibahahá!..."
- Grita forte a peonada -
"Pega-pega humaitá!..."
- Que o sol já vem na canhada -

O gado vai levantando
Com esta radiosa manhã
E, aos poucos, vai se fechando
O rodeio da Tarumã.

Rodeo Morning

With straw and logs on top
The fire woke up armed
And, in a whoosh, with the dry logs
The barn was illuminated.

On this loving morning
The roosters called the cowboys
To chat with the stove
Well-propped up against the logs.

The circle quickly formed
Of those drinking mate
And the rope-tobacco pipes
Share the time with the gourd.

From the slaughterer you can already hear
The scorching of the silly flames,
Frying the nerves of the neck
And the two strips at the ends.

With the used herb and the warm water
And the roast that is no more...
The horses, all in line,
Lend their ear to their bits.

A cowboy untwists the coils
Of a lasso that has no owner,
And another unharnesses
The halter of the cinnamon.

The foreman shouted out:
"-My people, let's go!"
One cowboy remained alone
Adjusting the leather straps of his spurs.

They left... their spurs jingling
The song of their rosettes
And the drool leapt out
From the bit of a rowdy.

He was left alone, milking the cows
The ranch's domestic cowboy
And the dew moistening the feet
Of the gentle dawn.

At the entrance gate to the winter pasture
The whole escort spreads out.
Bitter mate, roast beef,
Very sweet coffee on the way back!

"Whoa, there cow!... hahaha!..."
- The cowboys shout loudly -
"Catch-hold of the hummer!..."
- As the sun rises in the valley -

The cattle start to get up
With this radiant morning
And, little by little, the rodeo
Of Tarumã is over.
