Do Meu Rincão

Penca de potro e marcação porteira a fora,
Um par de galgos pra correr lebre aos domingos.
Atar o cacho lá onde a china prende o grampo
Sempre que o campo pede a tarefa dos pingos.

Cuidar a lua pra iniciar um bagual de freio,
Compor o arreio pra não pisar o cavalo,
A "cruza" boa pra "bandeá" o gado no passo,
Cimbrar o laço e "aguentá" o tirão do pealo.

Saltar bem cedo pra matear ao redor do fogo
Antes que a lida peça vaza na fronteira,
- Que o reio brabo e a espora vão sempre alerta -
E a volta certa da velha tava "culera".

São nessas coisas crioulas do meu rincão
Que a tradição tranca o garrão e se garante
E acha quem cante, com sotaque regional,
Para tornar universal nosso Rio Grande!

Saber das manhas do tempo e das mangas d'água
Quando se arma pra os lados do chovedor.
Dar um saludo mesmo pra quem não conhece
Quando se passa um vivente no corredor.

Pular de em pêlo pra manguear a cavalhada,
Quebrando geada na manhãzita de inverno.
Levar o pago refletido no semblante
Qual um palanque que se sustenta no cerno.

Chapéu tapeado, tirador, bota e bombacha,
Pilcha gaúcha, que é de festa e de serviço,
E o mesmo pala que vai ao ombro dobrado
Desce pra o braço e escora o que for preciso.

From My Corner

A string of foals with their brands outside the gate,
A pair of greyhounds to course hares on Sundays.
To tie up the bunch of horses where the babe pins her hair
Whenever the plain calls for the horses' work.

To observe the moon to start a bridleless horse,
To fit the gear so as not to hurt the horse,
The right "cross" to "brand" the cattle in the pass,
To throw the lasso and "withstand" the pull of the pealo.

To get up early to drink mate around the fire
Before the work gets going on the border,
- That the fierce reio and the spur are always alert -
And the return of the old "culera" was certain.

It is in these gaucho things of my corner
That tradition locks up the hoof and guarantees itself
And finds someone who sings, with a regional accent,
To make our Rio Grande universal!

To know about the tricks of the weather and the downpours
When it storms towards the rainy side.
To give a greeting even to those you don't know
When you pass a person in the corridor.

To jump bareback to handle the horses,
Breaking the frost on a winter morning.
To carry the payment reflected in your face,
Like a dais that stands on the core.

Tattered hat, gaucho belt, boots and bombachas,
Gaucho outfit, which is for parties and work,
And the same brim that goes to the folded shoulder
Goes down to the arm and supports whatever is needed.
