Lyrics Ain’t Love (Commentary) - Delta Rae

"No Peace in Quiet" and you'll find that one on Delta Rae's new
EP, "A Long and Happy Life," which is available now. And we are
Celebrating the release of the EP with Delta Rae. I want you to
Just get to know them a little bit better, so we've been talking
To them. We actually have one more song to play off the EP
But first, you guys have kind of a unique position because not
Just one of you sings lead. I know Liz does a lot of the lead vocals
But also Brittany and Ian and Eric, you all sing lead vocals
From time to time, so how do you determine who sings which song?
Really sometimes struggle with figuring out who should sing lead on
On a song. And because we wrote 70 songs for this record, we tried
A lot of things out. We have four singers in this band, but we
Wanted to have Liz and Brittany sing the songs on this record
Because they have just such a natural leadership in our band. And
We were writing so many songs that we thought were in their voice
And, uh, it just became more cohesive and exciting to take that
Point of direction. Some of these songs we had both of you guys
Try singing, and sometimes it was very natural, and other times it
Was like, we had to figure it out. And then all of a sudden, it
Becomes a duet and it's "I Moved South," or, it's a constant
Exploration. I think it's part of a creative constraint that Delta
Rae uniquely deals with, and I find it really exciting
And thrilling as a writer. I love writing for Brittany
And Liz, but it's also a point of anxiety because
You never know what's gonna happen with your song
Oh, I also think, like, the songs pick the person sometimes
You know, it, I, that's how I feel about it. It's like, Liz will
Try singing something, and it'll just come out like butter, and
Everyone's like, "Oh yeah!" Um, and then frequently, if a song
If the boys feel inspired to write a song that's got, like
A bit of a witchy, swampy vibe, it'll get thrown over to me, and
I'll add some of my flavor to it. So I think that there, there's
A bit of a natural division there too that is already worked out
Well, and really, it's a good problem to have when you've got four
People who can sing lead in a group. And let's talk about the last
Song on your EP. It's called "Ain't Love." Tell me about that one
Yeah, "Ain't Love" is one of my favorite songs on this EP, and I
Can't wait for everybody to hear it. It's, to me, about the fact
That the people that you love the most often are the ones that hurt
You the most, and that entering into a relationship, there's a
Point at which you realize that it's love in part because the stuff
That the other person says really matters, or the things that they
Do actually does hurt. It does, you can't, you know, not care
Brush it off anymore. It's sort of like, but we're in this together
And what you said matters to me. I also think that even when a
Relationship is painful, like, people get in a lot of arguments
I certainly tend to find myself in relationships like that where
There are real highs and there are real lows, and in some ways
Those lows make the love, you know, when it's good and when it's
Sweet, all that much sweeter. So the line in that song, "Oh baby
Were we both born sick? Ain't love 'til it hurts like this
" You know, I think that that kind of catches your ear '
Cause you kind of end up questioning, you're like, "Why am
I choosing this person over and over again who I'm, you know
Fighting with like cats and dogs?" But it's because love
Kind of can overpower that disagreement or overshadow it
I think a lot of people can relate to that. Sometimes it's
So bad, but it's so good, and I guess that's what this song
Is about. It's "Ain't Love," Delta Rae on Big Machine Radio
