My little boy came home from school the other day:
He told me what his teacher said with oh such great dismay.
She said "In Africa there are no tigers to be found:
There's no man on the moon and it's not cheese
Though it's yellow big and round
And there's no treasure and gold at the rainbow's end,
You're growing up and fantasizing's over now my friend".
But I said. "Yes there's tigers in Africa
And a man once walked upon the moon
And there's treasure and gold at the end of the rainbow;
My little boy now would I lie to you?"
And so I took him to the mighty Zambezi
I said "This time your teacher's wrong, now just you wait and see"
We launched our boat outside a place they called the Deka Drum
And soon our lines and spoons were flashing in the midday sun.
And somewhere near Msuna he hooked a fisherman's dream
With tiger stripes and gnashing teeth it danced upon the stream.
But I said. "Yes there's tigers in Africa
And a man once walked upon the moon
And there's treasure and gold at the end of the rainbow;
My little boy now would I lie to you?"
That night around the campfire in the cool and gentle breeze
We watched the moon rise up and it looked like a piece of cheese,
Then we counted stars and planets how they shined and shined
And I told him about Neil Armstrong's step for all mankind;
And all about the astronauts and moon buggies and space
And how going to the moon was such a great exciting race.
But I said. "Yes there's tigers in Africa
And a man once walked upon the moon
And there's treasure and gold at the end of the rainbow;
My little boy now would I lie to you?"
Next day it rained but later when the storm was gone,
A multi-coloured rainbow rose up in the glorious morn
And raindrops clung to leaves and shone like jewels all round
And the rainbow seemed to end right near us in the ground.
It was a treasured memory forever to behold.
I put my arms around my boy and said
"Now there's your treasure and gold"
I said. "Yes! there's tigers in Africa
And a man once walked upon the moon
And there's treasure and gold at the end of the rainbow;
My little boy now would I lie to you?"

Mon petit garçon est rentré de l'école l'autre jour :
Il m'a raconté ce que sa maîtresse avait dit avec tant de consternation.
Elle a dit : "En Afrique, il n'y a pas de tigres :
Il n'y a pas d'homme sur la lune et ce n'est pas du fromage
Même si c'est jaune, gros et rond
Et il n'y a ni trésor ni or au bout de l'arc-en-ciel,
Tu grandis et les rêves sont finis maintenant, mon ami".
Mais j'ai dit : "Si, il y a des tigres en Afrique
Et un homme a marché sur la lune
Et il y a un trésor et de l'or au bout de l'arc-en-ciel ;
Mon petit garçon, te mentirais-je ?"
Alors je l'ai emmené au puissant Zambèze
J'ai dit : "Cette fois, ta maîtresse a tort, attends et tu verras"
Nous avons mis notre bateau à l'eau près d'un endroit appelé le Deka Drum
Et bientôt nos lignes et nos cuillères brillaient sous le soleil de midi.
Et quelque part près de Msuna, il a attrapé le rêve de tout pêcheur
Avec des rayures de tigre et des dents acérées, il dansait sur le courant.
Mais j'ai dit : "Si, il y a des tigres en Afrique
Et un homme a marché sur la lune
Et il y a un trésor et de l'or au bout de l'arc-en-ciel ;
Mon petit garçon, te mentirais-je ?"
Cette nuit-là, autour du feu de camp, dans la brise fraîche et douce,
Nous avons regardé la lune se lever et elle ressemblait à un morceau de fromage,
Puis nous avons compté les étoiles et les planètes, comme elles brillaient
Et je lui ai parlé du pas de Neil Armstrong pour toute l'humanité ;
Et de tous les astronautes, des véhicules lunaires et de l'espace
Et comment aller sur la lune était une course si excitante.
Mais j'ai dit : "Si, il y a des tigres en Afrique
Et un homme a marché sur la lune
Et il y a un trésor et de l'or au bout de l'arc-en-ciel ;
Mon petit garçon, te mentirais-je ?"
Le lendemain, il a plu, mais plus tard, quand la tempête est passée,
Un arc-en-ciel multicolore s'est levé dans la matinée glorieuse
Et les gouttes de pluie s'accrochaient aux feuilles et brillaient comme des joyaux tout autour
Et l'arc-en-ciel semblait se terminer tout près de nous, sur le sol.
C'était un souvenir précieux à jamais.
J'ai pris mon garçon dans mes bras et j'ai dit
"Voilà ton trésor et ton or"
J'ai dit : "Oui ! il y a des tigres en Afrique
Et un homme a marché sur la lune
Et il y a un trésor et de l'or au bout de l'arc-en-ciel ;
Mon petit garçon, te mentirais-je ?"
