For many centuries nobody believed
there was a mountain in the African cloud.
With a snow-capped dome that rumbled and moaned;
Kilimanjaro was hidden in a shroud.
But the years have flown and the secrets are all known
About her equatorial paradise.
So I asked a Chagga guide to help me up her sides
through her rainforests, lava, snow and ice.
"Jambo! Jambo! Kilimanjaro!" a Chagga porter sang to me,
"po-le, po-le, you gotta go slowly
And soon upon Uhuru's peak you will be"
"Jambo! Jambo! kilimanjaro!" A Chagga porter sang to me,
"Uhuru's calling we'll be there by morning,

The mountain is hard and it's in Africa's back yard.
The paths are steep and nights are so cold.
Blood sweat and tears and a little bit of fear,
To climb her you gotta be bold.
The Chagga porter's near and he whispers in my ear

When the road seems long and you wanna go home
Think about that freedom in the sky."

I've walked for days and days through the cloud and the haze
And I'm wondering just why the hell I came.
I can hardly breath and I'm crawling on my knees,
To climb this thing you gotta be insane.
Now I'm on the peak and I can hardly speak,
I've battled through the ice and the scree,
The sun begins to rise and I'm finally alive,
Kilimanjaro, you set my spirit free.
