Manchmal fahre ich aus ′ner alten Gewohnheit
'Ne Ausfahrt zu spät von der Autobahn raus

Dann halt ich genau vor meinem Elternhaus

Da steht es noch immer wie vor hundert Jahren

Die Farbe der Haustür ist abgeblättert

Meine Mutter macht auf, ihre Hände zittern wie immer ein wenig
Es riecht nach Kaffee und ein bisschen nach Rauch
Obwohl Vater ja angeblich schon lange nicht mehr raucht

Ich seh ihn im Sessel vor seinem alten Röhrenradio
Die Augen geschlossen und er dirigiert
Seinen Mozart, ich habe ihm rot auf der Skala
Seine Lieblingssender mit Edding markiert

In der Diele hängt dieser Trevira-Mantel
Die steinalte Katze schnurrt leis vor sich hin
Wie sehen mich die beiden, was werden sie sagen
Jetzt wo ich selbst so grau wie sie geworden bin?

Auf dem Küchentisch steht das Glas Pulverkaffee
Der Topf mit dem Tauchsieder, vorsintflutlich
Der Kühlschrank beklebt mit Postkarten und Zetteln
Ach, ich könnt euch was erzählen, sag ich

Wie wir mit den Kindern die Dahlien gepflanzt haben
In eurem Garten, um sie Jahr für Jahr
Dann mühselig aus der gefrorenen Erde wieder auszugraben
Wenn der Winter da war

Und vorm Haus träumte Fred auf der Schaukel vom Fliegen
Ihr habt sie dort mal nur für ihn aufgestellt
Fred ist groß und ist tatsächlich Flieger geworden
Und fliegt riesen Flugzeuge um die ganze Welt

Und wie sie mit Mutter am Küchentisch malte
Schier unermüdlich, Blatt für Blatt

Nun, Lulu ist heute eine Silberschmiedin
Sie singt, malt und kocht, da fällst du auf die Knie
Und Mutter sagt: "Junge, hast du getrunken?"
"Aber Mutter", sag ich, "Das mach ich doch nie"

Und Großenkel habt ihr, ja, ganz wunderbare
So freundliche kleine, also ich sag
Die werdet ihr lieben, die singen und tanzen
Und malen den lieben, langen Tag

The House at the Traffic Light

Sometimes, out of old habit, I take
An exit too late from the Autobahn
