And was headed for the Philippines leaving from the island of Guam

An invasion of Japan was thought the only way to end the bloody war
In the early morning hours, two explosions rocked the crew
And it only took 12 minutes for the ship to sink and hit the ocean floor

Like bullets to the her brain and guts, torpedoes lanced her bow and mid
She bled out fuel and oil, resulting in a massive oil slick
300 men went down with her as sailors often did
800 men were cast from her now swimming in this oozing, putrid ick

By Schools of sharks attracted by the splashing and the scent of flowing blood
Listen and you'll hear it: just imagine how it sounded
Men screaming and sharks splashing, you could hear their jaws collapsing with a thud

Out of this 800 men, 500 men would perish
Many men were eaten, many drowned and some committed suicide
Years later they were interviewed and with these memories nightmarish
For this ship they called the "Indy", to a man they voiced affection, love and pride
