I ate the leftover cake from your birthday for breakfast
I had to I was sad
I know it wasn't the right choice but it also wasn't the wrong one
Also it's Monday
Again

They never seem to stop arriving
And that's a good thing or so I am trying to believe
Halfway through the morning, I found frosting on the outside of my hand
The same place where I would find smudges of green Crayola marker
As I'd scribble the grass in my 2nd grade class
Back when I looked forward to Mondays
And back when I could have cake for breakfast
Well a muffin

But we all know muffins are just morning cake
Before school I'd have an Otis Spunkmeyer Chocolate Chocolate Muffin
For breakfast because I didn't like eggs or oatmeal
Something about texture
And I really just wanted cake for breakfast
I mean a muffin

And today just like when I was 7
I needed to begin my day with something sweet
So I could move my feet
Because sometimes you just need to have
Cake for breakfast

Kuchen zum Frühstück

Ich habe den restlichen Kuchen von deinem Geburtstag zum Frühstück gegessen.
Ich musste, ich war traurig.
Ich weiß, es war nicht die richtige Wahl, aber es war auch nicht die falsche.
Außerdem ist es Montag.
Schon wieder.

Sie scheinen nie aufzuhören, anzukommen.
Und das ist gut so, oder zumindest versuche ich, das zu glauben.
Auf halbem Weg durch den Morgen fand ich Zuckerguss auf meiner Hand.
An der gleichen Stelle, wo ich Flecken von grünen Crayola-Markern finden würde.
Als ich in der 2. Klasse das Gras kritzelt.
Damals, als ich mich auf Montage freute.
Und damals, als ich Kuchen zum Frühstück haben konnte.
Naja, einen Muffin.

Aber wir alle wissen, dass Muffins nur Morgenkuchen sind.
Vor der Schule aß ich einen Otis Spunkmeyer Schoko-Schoko-Muffin.
Zum Frühstück, weil ich keine Eier oder Haferflocken mochte.
Irgendwas mit der Textur.
Und ich wollte eigentlich nur Kuchen zum Frühstück.
Ich meine, einen Muffin.

Und heute, genau wie als ich 7 war,
musste ich meinen Tag mit etwas Süßem beginnen.
Damit ich meine Füße bewegen konnte.
Denn manchmal muss man einfach
Kuchen zum Frühstück haben.
